The Islamic Republic of Iran has the second largest reserves of natural gas, and the third largest reserves of oil, in the world. In the past thirty years, the country has received more than $1.4 trillion from the sale of oil alone. Yet in this resource-rich country, the people of Iran have been suffering economically. Today, over 40 million Iranians live in absolute poverty, and nearly 70 percent of the population falls below the relative poverty line.
