WASHINGTON — President Trump escalated his trade battle with Canada Monday after its prime minister, Mark Carney, said the two countries were at “war” — with Vice President JD Vance dismissively calling the northern neighbor “a state.”
Carney broke off trade talks on Friday and claimed that “America is trying to break us so that they can own us,” but that it would “never, ever happen.”
Trump announced new trade actions against Canada to pressure Carney to return to the table.
