The U.S. government has said it launched the strikes in response to Iran attacking a commercial vessel on Thursday.

The Associated Press reported that the U.S. Navy is overseeing a multinational maritime body that is attempting to “expand a route near Oman for both inbound and outbound traffic.”
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi argued that Iran has to maintain control of the Strait of Hormuz.
“Any attempt to establish new or separate arrangements from those currently being carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran, will only lead to further complications, delay the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and increase the level of tension, just as over the past two nights we witnessed incidents in the Strait of Hormuz that led to an increase in tension and confrontation,” he said in Baghdad, according to the AP.
