Helen Mirren Harassed on London Street for Her Pro-Israel Views

The celebrated actress Helen Mirren was walking on a London street last November with her husband, Taylor Hackford, when an anti-Israel fanatic suddenly accosted and screamed at her. She is not Jewish, which makes her support for Israel all the more maddening for those consumed with anti-Israel animus. A video of this verbal attack has just surfaced. Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren was verbally harassed on a London street by a pro-Palestinian activist who called her an “evil Zionist b—-” while she was walking with her husband, film director Taylor Hackford.

Video circulating on social media shows the confrontation taking place Wednesday evening near Tower Hill in London. Mirren, 80, initially appeared calm and asked the man if he was okay before he launched into an angry tirade over her longstanding support for Israel.

The Telegraph reports that an activist accused Mirren of supporting Israel “because of the Holocaust” and shouted insults at both her and Hackford. Hackford responded by repeatedly telling the man to leave them alone.

Mirren has publicly defended Israel for years and has opposed cultural boycotts against the country. In 2023, while promoting her film Golda, in which she portrayed former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir, Mirren said she believed in “the existence of Israel” and that the country should endure “for the rest of eternity.”

She also recently signed a public letter supporting Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest amid calls for a boycott over the war in Gaza….

The man in the video referenced an interview with the Israeli Channel 12, which aired before the October 7 attacks. In the interview, Mirren said she believed in the “existence of Israel.” Mirren also admitted she had “witnessed things that were wrong”, including “Arabs being thrown out of their houses in Jerusalem” when she first visited the country in 1967.

The handful of Arabs who were “thrown out of their houses in Jerusalem” in 1967 had been living in houses in east Jerusalem and the Old City that had belonged to Jews before the 1948 war and then were seized by Jordan’s Arab Legion, that then gave those houses to Arabs. The Israelis in 1967 were merely taking back what had belonged to their Jewish owners until the 1948 war.

So it has come to this. An 80-year-old woman out for a walk with her husband is screamed at with an obscenity-laced denunciation because she has a long record of sympathy and support for the Jewish state. Will Helen Mirren now curb her appearances in public? Will other recognizable celebrities think twice before expressing publicly their support for Israel, in order to avoid the kind of verbal harassment that she endured, or perhaps a “kinetic” harassment that will be more cutting, in the literal sense, than words?

In a related incident, the British Museum has given into the bullyboys who threatened to disrupt a Jewish Culture Month event after learning that “registered attendees were individuals intending to deliberately disrupt the event.” That event has now been postponed indefinitely. The museum says it chose to “protect the event” by cancelling it — sorry, “postponing it.” What kind of protection is that? And when will It ever be safe to put on this event? In a month? In a year? In ten years? When will the fetid fever of antisemitism break, so that a perfectly innocuous event having to do with British Museum holdings related to ancient Israel can be held without fear of violence?

There will not soon be a time when such an event, celebrating the holdings in the British Museum pertaining to ancient Israel, can take place free of the threat of violence. But instead of postponing it, in the hope that in the near future it can be put on, the Museum ought to have stuck to its guns — that is, to its original schedule. It knew that there were people planning to attend the event only in order to disrupt it. Very well, then: the Museum can have a large and visible police presence in the lecture hall, as well as plainclothes detectives scattered throughout the audience, ready at a moment’s notice to immediately drag from the site anyone who starts to act up.
