In the wake of Tuesday’s Republican rout, I wrote “Republicans Get Routed After Betraying Their Mandate.” My argument stands: Republican leaders failed the voters who gave them power. They asked for the House, the Senate and the White House. They got all three. Then they squandered the opportunity to turn a historic mandate into lasting law.
Now comes the predictable stampede to blame Trump. How convenient. The people who spent two years explaining why something couldn’t be done suddenly have absolute certainty about who caused their defeat.
There is much to learn from Tuesday’s shellacking: Republican leaders squandered their mandate and unapologetic conservatives who won offer a lesson the party cannot afford to ignore.
It’s what we must build on.
Start with the Republican leadership’s failure to pass the SAVE America Act. They squandered their opportunity to strengthen election safeguards and show the base that its most fundamental demands mattered. Instead, they delivered failed, again and gave their own voters another reason to lose faith. Passing it would have answered a central concern about election integrity; it would certainly have prevented fraud and changed the outcome.
Just as telling and just as important—is who actually won.
The unapologetic conservatives. The fighters. The unequivocals: Republicans with the courage of their convictions, willing to state them plainly and defend them publicly. Their victories deserve scrutiny before the same failed leadership prescribes another retreat. The party owes its voters principles it will defend and promises it will turn into law.
Look no further than Brandon Gill who won reelection in Texas. Gill is an unapologetic America First conservative who has made immigration enforcement, national sovereignty and government accountability central to his congressional work. Serving on the Judiciary, Budget and Oversight committees, including the DOGE subcommittee, he has focused on border security and cutting government waste. He introduced legislation seeking to restrict birthright citizenship for children of unlawful entrants and birth tourists, and another bill to eliminate exemptions from English-language and civics requirements for naturalization. These legislative proposals leave no ambiguity about his priorities. Gill gives voters a clearly stated conservative agenda and puts his name on legislation to advance it. On Tuesday, voters returned him to Congress.
Keith Self won in the 3rd. Michael Cloud won in the 27th. All three have belonged to the House Freedom Caucus. Steve Toth, who campaigned on his uncompromising conservative record, won the 2nd District. These candidates hardly offered voters a watered-down version of the Republican platform. Yet they prevailed—even as Republicans lost the statewide races for governor and Senate.
Look beyond Texas. Randy Fine, n outspoken, unapologetic conservative, won reelection in Florida’s 6th Congressional District while Republicans elsewhere were being swept out. He hardly fits the establishment’s preferred portrait of a Republican who survives by keeping quiet and sanding down his convictions. His victory deserves a place in the Republican reckoning: before demanding that conservatives retreat, explain why a fighter like Fine prevailed.
Randy Fine is a fighter, and unapologetically pro-Israel conservative whose record includes concrete legislative victories. In the Florida Legislature, he sponsored measures enacted into law defining antisemitism and establishing security funding for Jewish day schools and preschools. He also sponsored the House resolution calling for Florida government agencies to disassociate from CAIR, which passed 98–15. In Congress, he introduced the No Antisemitism in Education Act, seeking to extend protections modeled on Florida’s law to the federal level. Fine’s politics are confrontational and his positions explicit. Whatever voters think of him, they have little reason to wonder where he stands.
Jim Jordan won in Ohio. James Comer won in Kentucky. Clay Higgins won in Louisiana.
Republicans who stood their ground and spoke without apology won. Those victories should shape the party’s path forward.
These victories deserve serious examination. They also require an honest comparison: winning a Republican district is different from winning statewide, and conservative Ken Paxton’s Senate defeat makes sweeping explanations inadequate. Geography, turnout, opponents and individual records matter. The results alone cannot tell us why every voter stayed home or changed sides.
But the establishment cannot wave away the conservatives who won while insisting that conservatism caused the losses. Republicans should study those victories as closely as their defeats.
My contention is that the party has exhausted its voters’ patience with promises followed by excuses. A majority is supposed to accomplish something. Voters are entitled to demand legislation, accountability and results.
The Republican leadership’s first question should be brutally simple: What did we deliver with the power we were given?
If Democrats can win with jihadis, communists and lunatics, Republicans can certainly win with rational, patriotic, unapologetic Americans who love this country and have the backbone to defend it.
Democrats are counting on the political rewards of the border chaos they created. We must elect officials who will enforce our immigration laws, deport those here illegally and reclaim our education system from the ideologues who have turned classrooms into political recruiting grounds. If it’s not too late….
