Mamdani is going balls to the all in defense of another violent illegal. Siding with the enemy. Mamdani calls Oscar Belgal a “New Yorker” and tried to free him from custody; his former neighbor calls him “a menace to society.”
Machete-wielding. Gang-linked. Illegal. That’s Oscar Belgal, the man Mamdani called a “New Yorker” and tried to spring from custody. His old neighbor has a different word for him: “a menace to society.”
- ‘Criminal illegal’ migrant shot by ICE has rap sheet of alarming crimes — and is ‘absolutely not’ a New Yorker: neighbors
- Feds believe ICE shooting gangbanger Oscar Belgal belonged to blood-thirsty Trinitarios gang

The illegal with a violent criminal record tried to flee immigration agents in the Bronx—with his five-year-old son in the backseat. He was shot and wounded him during the attempted escape. And whom did Mayor Zohran Mamdani rush to condemn? The agents.
At a late-night news conference, Mamdani announced that he had spoken to President Trump and demanded that ICE leave New York. He accused immigration officers of terrorizing the city and declared the agency “rotten to its core.”
Again. rotten is a political establishment that obstructs immigration enforcement, then exploits the resulting confrontation to demand even more obstruction.
According to the New York Post, Oscar Belgal, 28, is a Dominican national believed to have entered the United States illegally in 2022. He is suspected of armed robbery, drug dealing and ties to the violent Trinitarios gang. Those allegations warrant investigation. Mamdani’s response is to demand the removal of the officers charged with enforcing immigration law.
This is his vision of public safety: drive out federal agents while turning the people they pursue into political causes. Where is his outrage over a father allegedly attempting to escape with a small child in the car? Where is his concern for New Yorkers who expect their mayor to uphold the law?
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin blamed New York’s sanctuary policies for preventing an earlier apprehension and contributing to the dangerous confrontation. His point goes straight to the heart of this disgrace: politicians cannot obstruct enforcement and then pretend they bear no responsibility when enforcement becomes more difficult and dangerous.
Gov. Kathy Hochul promptly joined the chorus. She said she had expressed outrage to Trump and Mullin and urged them to halt ICE operations in New York.

‘Criminal illegal’ migrant shot by ICE terrorized NYC apartment building with machete: ‘Menace to society’
By Tina Moore, Adry Torres and Sonya Gugliara, Oct. 10, 2026:
The illegal migrant shot by federal ICE agents in a chaotic Bronx showdown terrorized his former neighbors with a machete—and a terrified resident said Saturday he’s relieved the accused gangbanger has finally been taken off the streets.
Dominican Republic-native Oscar Belgal, 28, who authorities said has ties to the bloodthirsty Trinitarios street gang, wreaked havoc at the Washington Heights apartment building where he lived until about a year ago, according to a one-time neighbor.
“He’s a menace to society,” the shaken resident said of Belgal — whom Mayor Mamdani outrageously called a “New Yorker” whose release he tried to negotiate as he railed against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“I spoke to him once and told him, ‘Look, you need to be more submissive because I see you acting too reckless’ … He thought he was a tough guy,” the resident told The Post.
The former neighbor, a man from the Dominican Republic who declined to give his name for safety concerns, recalled one of Belgal’s most unhinged outbursts while living there — in which he pulled a machete on another resident’s nephew.

ADVERTISEMENTHe claimed Belgal — who the feds believe slipped into the US with a migrant caravan in 2022 without encountering border patrol — whipped out the massive blade during a fight with the man outside the building last year. No one was seriously injured in the squabble, he added.
Belgal’s rap sheet includes a 2023 armed robbery conviction and an August 2025 arrest for allegedly selling lethal drugs like fentanyl, cocaine and heroin.
Those cases were not bail-eligible — so Belgal was sprung after his arrest, though prosecutors were granted the highest level of “supervised release,” sources have said. He reportedly told officials he was not in a gang, and has pleaded not guilty in that case, which remains open.
Agents first tried to arrest Belgal in September but he evaded capture, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Belgal’s attorney did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
His most recent run-in with the law was Thursday when two plainclothes ICE agents, with guns drawn, approached the front left side of the gray Honda CR-V he was driving as he peeled out of a parking spot on 225th Street in Marble Hill in The Bronx.
One punched and smashed the glass of the driver’s side window. Marcos Charles, the head of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division, said Belgal “accelerated” at the agents, “smashing” into two of them, which was not captured on the CCTV footage obtained by The Post Friday.
Agents caught up with Belgal about half a block away on Marble Hill Ave outside the C&G Gourmet Deli before bullets rang and he was shot in the neck, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
His 5-year-old son, who was in the backseat of the vehicle, was unharmed. Belgal is expected to recover.
On Saturday, protests erupted in Midtown in support of the alleged gangbanger, with anti-ICE rioters holding signs demanding “justice for Oscar Belgal” and to “abolish ICE.” Other posters called for Tisch to be fired.
Hundreds gather in midtown Manhattan following an incident in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, in New York, Saturday.
“He’s putting his son at risk. He’s got legal trouble, yet he drives around with his son in the car?” Belgal’s outraged former neighbor asked. “No, I don’t think that’s right. If he owes a debt to society, he should pay it…He was a danger to society.”Another resident was surprised to hear that her former neighbor was wanted by the feds.
“It might be true, I suppose—I’m an older person and I’m not out here all the time—but I never heard anything like that about him,” she said.
A third resident seemed more familiar with Belgal, saying, “He wasn’t a hard working person, I’ll put it that way. He was in the streets doing crazy things.”
Melvin, a neighborhood barber who cuts hair about an avenue away from Belgal’s former apartment, was glad that Belgal had been taken into custody.
“It’s a relief that he was apprehended,” he said. “The thing is, when someone is a criminal, they go out onto the streets to cause harm. They don’t care about anyone’s life; they only care about what they can gain by hurting others.
