North Carolina’s governor just told every resident to observe Ramadan.

he document declares that Islamic traditions and values “serve as an inspiration and reflection” for millions and that the Muslim community will celebrate “the revelation of the Quran and its teachings.”

It then states: “I am proud to recognize the contributions of Muslim-Americans” and ends by proclaiming the dates as Ramadan “and commend its observance to all residents.”

A government proclamation that praises a religion’s teachings as inspiration and then urges the entire population to observe it is not neutral recognition.

It is the state putting its official seal behind specific religious claims and practices.

The First Amendment was written to prevent exactly this kind of entanglement.

North Carolinians should decide whether their governor’s job includes promoting religious observance or simply protecting the right of every citizen to practice or not practice any faith freely.

It was one thing to wish Muslims a “Ramadan Mubarak” (“Blessed Ramadan”), akin to “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Easter.” It is quite another for Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina, where Muslims make up 1% of the population, apparently to tell everyone in the state that they should observe Ramadan in precisely the way that Muslims do. We are mercifully finished with Ramadan proclamations for this year, but Stein’s should not be forgotten. Last month, North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein dropped a jaw-dropping proclamation declaring February 17 through March 19, 2026, as Ramadan in the Tar Heel State.

The official wording is crystal clear and deeply troubling: “Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim February 17 – March 19, 2026, as ‘Ramadan’ in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all residents.”

This isn’t some benign nod to a minority community.

The proclamation’s language specifically urges non-Muslims to observe Ramadan, a full month of religious fasting and Quran study straight out of Sharia law, a system totally at odds with American freedom and the separation of mosque and state.

This isn’t harmless cultural recognition.

It’s the state of North Carolina officially pushing participation in a foreign religious obligation complete with strict rules and brutal punishments.

Just look at how Stein handles other heritage months. His Black History Month proclamation commends “its observance to all residents.” Same boilerplate for American Indian Heritage Month and Hindu Heritage Month and Diwali: “commend its observance to all citizens.”

These are fine. They’re about history, contributions, and voluntary reflection. No one is expected to fast, pray, or study religious texts. No foreign legal code is involved.

Ramadan is something else entirely. It’s one of the five pillars of Islam.

For a month, observant Muslims must go without food, water, smoking, or sex from dawn to sunset while ramping up prayers and intense Quran study.

Stein’s proclamation doesn’t just acknowledge the Muslim community, it “commends its observance to all residents.” That’s code for encouraging everyone, including Christians, Jews, Hindus, atheists, and secular folks, to take part in a religious ritual rooted in Sharia.

In countries that actually follow Sharia — Iran, Saudi Arabia, parts of Malaysia — breaking the religious fast publicly gets you arrested, fined, jailed, flogged, or worse….

In New York City, mosques are now blasting the Islamic call to prayer over loudspeakers across entire neighborhoods during Ramadan….

Apparently hundreds of thousands of non-Muslim New Yorkers are awakened in the early hours of the morning, before daylight, by electronically amplified calls to prayer. These calls to prayer are completely unnecessary. Even Muslim can easily program his watch or phone or computer to vibrate or issue a quiet reminder when the time for each of the five daily prayers comes round. The explosive sound of the muezzin’s amplified azan (call to prayer) continues, quite unnecessarily, as a sign of Muslim power and dominance: We are here. We can wake up everyone. We are in your face and in the public space. Nothing will stop us.

True tolerance means respecting [sic] the Muslim community without surrendering public spaces and official state recognition to a faith with coercive rules and a clear expansionist agenda.

There is no need to “respect” the Muslim community. It can be recognized, which is a different thing. Why should non-Muslims “respect’ a faith that says they are “the most vile of created beings”?

Members of the North Carolina State Assembly should criticize the Governor for his declaration on Ramadan. He needs to be reminded that the establishment clause of the First Amendment forbids favoring one religion over another. He needs to explain why he thinks Islam should receive special recognition from the state, as it does with his declaration on Ramadan. He should be asked why he has made no similar appeals for all North Carolinians to participate fully in the holidays or holy days of Christians, Jews, Hindus, and others. Governor Stein should be asked, finally, two questions. First, is he is aware that Muslims learn from their Qur’an that we, the world’s non-Muslims, are “the most vile of created beings” (98:6)? And second, “are you aware, Governor Stein, that Muhammad, who for Muslims is the Model of Conduct (‘uswa hasana’) and the Perfect Man (‘al-insan al-kamil’), an exemplar to be followed in every respect, consummated his marriage to his last wife, Aisha, when he was fifty-four and she was only nine?”

That should give him pause.
