Mirror: On Feb 18 it was announced that Cynthia Erivo be taking on the role of Jesus in the Hollywood Bowl production of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar this summer. The Wicked star is set to take on the titular role with the rest of the cast set to be announced at a later date. She previously portrayed Mary Magdalene in the all-female concept album Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen in 2020. Reactions to the casting choice on social media were mixed, with some people expressing excitement over a queer Black woman taking on the role and others slamming the choice as “blasphemous” (Mirror).
