Police kill armed man trying to set fire to synagogue in France, says minister

French police have killed an armed man who was trying to set fire to a synagogue in the northern city of Rouen, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin says.
“National police in Rouen neutralized early this morning an armed individual who clearly wanted to set fire to the city’s synagogue,” Darmanin writes on X. A source close to the case tells AFP the man was wielding a knife and an iron bar before he was shot by police…..

The police intervened on Friday around 6:45 a.m. when smoke was coming from the synagogue. An individual threw “an incendiary element, a sort of Molotov cocktail” into the building, causing “significant damage”, according to the mayor of Rouen, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol.
A knife and an iron bar
There, a man carrying a knife and an iron bar walks towards them. One of the police officers uses his weapon and fatally wounds the man, detail our colleagues from BFMTV.
Five shots were fired by the police officer, four of which hit the assailant, according to Rouen prosecutor Frédéric Teillet. The agent was taken into custody to ensure that the use of his weapon was legal.
The mayor of Rouen denounced a “deeply anti-Semitic” act. “It’s fright, it’s shock,” he confided, before providing “his support” to the Jewish community.
The individual killed by the police in Rouen had been under obligation to leave French territory (OQTF) for less than a year, BFMTV learned from a source close to the matter.
