Over 62,000 defective masks sent to Toronto long-term care workers

The city is recalling more than 62,000 surgical masks distributed to Toronto long-term care homes due to quality control issues.
ADVERTISEMENTAnd the city says it’s working with the Ontario government to quickly procure new ones, as the recall represents a “significant shortfall” in Toronto’s supply of personal protective equipment (PPE.)
Officials started receiving reports Tuesday about the masks tearing and ripping, said Matthew Pegg, Toronto’s fire chief and head of emergency management.
“Immediately, upon becoming aware of this situation we took action and recalled the masks,” he said Wednesday.
The masks, part of a $200,000 order of 4,000 boxes, were from a vendor the city hadn’t used previously, Pegg said.
Pegg also confirmed the masks were manufactured in China.
On March 28, 1,252 boxes, containing 62,600 masks were distributed to long-term care homes in Toronto.
ADVERTISEMENT“The city’s occupational health and safety team are engaged, and are conducting an investigation to determine how many employees may have used these masks, and if there was possible exposure to COVID-19 as a result,” Pegg said.
Shortages of PPE are an ongoing issue during the coronavirus crisis.
On Sunday, a truckload of 3 million N95 masks which were manufactured by 3M and destined for Ontario was halted at the border by U.S. officials, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Monday.
A deal has since been struck with the Americans to ensure the masks — manufactured out of paper pulp produced in B.C. — can still be shipped into Canada.
Pegg said the defective masks represented roughly half of the city’s current supply and that there’s a six-to-eight week supply of other PPE items in the city’s inventory.
The incident prompted the city to undergo a full review of the city’s PPE procurement protocols, which will now include additional inspection to ensure items meet standards
