“Pledge Riders to vow ‘Never Again’ in Boca Raton,” by Lois K. Solomon, Sun Sentinel, September 3, 2014:

Planning to stand before a World War II-era railway car in Boca Raton, some Christian and Jewish motorcyclists will make a solemn pledge Thursday to prevent another Holocaust.

The cyclists, making a ride through several East Coast cities where they took similar vows, are members of the Pledge Riders, who say they work to fight anti-Semitism and Sharia, or strict Islamic, law.

About 100 Pledge Riders are expected at a banquet late Thursday at the Boca Raton Marriott at Boca Center, where Pamela Geller, president of the American Freedom Defense Initiative and Stop Islamization of America, will be the featured speaker.

The cyclists say they are united in their enthusiasm for Israel as a Jewish homeland and bastion of democracy in the chaotic Middle East, where Jews and Christians are threatened by wars, hostility and cruelty.

“We recognize the love and fervor America’s Christians have for Israel,” said Perry Birman, of Boca Raton, a spokesman for the group. “This touches me very much. Once Israel goes, America is next.”

This is the third year the Pledge Riders have taken vows at stops in the United States and Canada, said Howard Galganov, the group’s founder and senior director. The riders organized in Canada as a way to raise money for Holocaust education and often coordinate events with the Rev. Gary Burd, national director of Mission: M25, a group of evangelical Christian cyclists based in Amarillo, Texas.

Burd has been blogging about this Never Again ride, which began Aug. 27 in Scranton, Pa., at MissionM25.org.

“Far too many people have forgotten or never even learned about the Holocaust,” Galganov said. “Anti-Semitism is just as aggressive now as it was in pre-World War II Germany. People are not paying attention to history.”

Rabbis, ministers and Holocaust survivors will join the cyclists for the 5 p.m. pledge near the Marriott, where a World War II boxcar will be set up as a backdrop. The boxcar is scheduled to arrive Thursday from Naples, where it is on loan to the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida.

The riders plan to travel to Naples early Thursday to escort the boxcar on its trip to Boca Raton. The car, built in 1919 and used in the German railway system until 1945, is used as a traveling exhibit by the museum.

It’s unclear if the 10-ton car transported Jews to concentration camps, said Joan Hogan, the museum’s marketing director.

“We do not know for certain what this particular car was used for. It could have been used for military purposes, shipping of goods, etc.,” Hogan said in an email. “However, people were transported to camps in this type of railway car.”

The riders plan to say Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, in front of the boxcar in the Marriott parking lot, followed by their Never Again pledge.

The ceremony is open to the public. For more information, call Birman at 954-415-3994.
