Michigan’s Jewish Democratic attorney general is too afraid to attend her own party’s convention—and that is a damning indictment of what the Democratic Party has become.
Dana Nessel says she expects to be chased, harassed, screamed at and booed off the stage merely for showing up. She says party leaders ignored her repeated warnings about members who have targeted her. This is not some fringe Republican gathering Democrats can smear from afar. This is their own convention, their own activists and their own leadership refusing to confront the antisemitic menace metastasizing within their ranks.
The party that incessantly lectures America about “hate” cannot guarantee the safety of its own Jewish attorney general. Michigan’s Democratic primary—pitting establishment Rep. Haley Stevens against socialist Abdul El-Sayed—has become a test of whether the party can arrest its plunge into radicalism or whether the extremists have already seized control.
Nessel’s self-imposed exile from her own convention says it all: antisemitism is no longer lurking at the Democratic Party’s margins. It is driving prominent Jewish Democrats from the room while party leaders look the other way.
Michigan Advance’s Katherine Dailey reported Dailey reported that during the conversation, Nessel, who is Jewish, also told the group she had asked party leaders to address past harassment at the state party convention:
She criticized party leadership for not responding to concerns she said she has raised about members who have harassed her in the past, and compared the rise of antisemitism on the political left and in the Democratic Party to the proliferation of neo-Nazi organizations in far-right fringe politics.

Michigan Democrats’ Israel divide deepens as Jewish attorney general skips state convention
Nessel’s absence comes after Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., was loudly heckled by pro-Palestinian activists during the party’s April convention as she addressed the crowd about her support for Israel.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel will not attend Saturday’s Michigan Democratic Party convention, citing concerns about antisemitic harassment and what she describes as a deteriorating political climate within her own party.
Nessel, a Democrat and the first Jewish person elected to statewide executive office in Michigan, announced last month that she would skip the Aug. 29 nominating convention in Lansing because she does not feel safe or welcome there.
“I don’t feel safe going,” Nessel said, according to Fox News. “I feel like my presence isn’t going to be welcome. I don’t want to get chased around. I don’t want to get harassed. I don’t want to get yelled and screamed at. I don’t want to get booed off the stage, irrespective of what I’m saying.”
Her absence comes after Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., was loudly heckled by pro-Palestinian activists during the party’s April convention as she addressed the crowd about her support for Israel.
Stevens ultimately lost the Democratic Senate nomination to Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate who has been sharply critical of Israel.
