DHS Secretary Mullin: Election security is national security; details noncitizen voter registrations, foreign threats

WASHINGTON — Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Friday highlighted vulnerabilities in the nation’s election systems and detailed steps the Trump administration is taking to address noncitizen voting and foreign interference while touting increased immigration enforcement.
Mullin, speaking at a press conference, emphasized that election security constitutes national security and called for bipartisan action to safeguard voter rolls and voting infrastructure.
ADVERTISEMENT“President Trump is correct when he said that election security is national security,” Mullin said. “This is just exposing what took place and to make sure it never happens again, and there’s some really easy steps that can be taken to secure our elections, and it shouldn’t be a partisan issue.”
The secretary outlined findings from ongoing reviews of voter registrations. His department identified 250,000 noncitizens registered to vote in four states, Mullin said. Officials also worked with proactive states to find 28,000 noncitizens on voter rolls and discovered an additional 400,000 deceased individuals still listed as registered voters.
Mullin pointed to foreign threats, accusing Iran of hacking state voter files and attempting to compromise systems used by military members to vote.
“We know that Iran hacked our state voter files and attempted to compromise our systems where military members used to vote,” Mullin said. “What’s frustrating again in this is that the Biden administration knew this and our Intel Community knew this […] they withheld this information from the public, they withheld it from Congress. That should NEVER happen again, and because of President Trump’s leadership, we’re not allowing that to happen.”
He warned that foreign adversaries have inserted components into voting machines that could allow manipulation.
“We know for sure that our foreign adversaries, not our allies […] have parts that are vital pieces in our voting machines,” Mullin said. “We know that they can access what they consider the ‘key’ to the back of these machines. We know they can change voter registration, and your vote. We know it’s possible. There’s not a question. It’s not even for debate. […] What we are saying is that every state should partner with us to work to secure this.”
Mullin’s remarks come amid the administration’s broader push to strengthen election integrity. Officials have urged states to remove ineligible voters and implement stricter verification measures.
ADVERTISEMENTSeparately, Mullin addressed immigration enforcement efforts, noting significant increases in arrests and deportations under the current administration.
“We have ramped up our enforcement and our arresting of illegals,” Mullin said, adding that deportations thus far in 2026 have nearly reached the total for all of 2025. “Our arrests are up. We’re hitting single-day records every single day.”
