US military shoots down 4 Iranian drones heading toward Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. military shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones Friday that were heading toward the Strait of Hormuz and posed an imminent threat to maritime traffic, according to the U.S. Central Command (Centcom).
The U.S. military then struck an Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk, a city in Hormozgan province, and on Qeshm Island, an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz, to “defend against further attacks,” Centcom said.
“American forces remain vigilant and postured to respond to unjustified Iranian aggression in self-defense,” Centcom said.
Centcom also announced late Friday that U.S. forces intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones launched by Iran toward the Strait of Hormuz, Kuwait and Bahrain.
ADVERTISEMENT“Initial assessments indicate six of the missiles launched by Iran were intercepted and a seventh did not reach its intended target,” Centcom said. “There are currently no reports of harm to U.S. personnel, and Iranian claims of damaging U.S. 5th fleet headquarters in Bahrain are false.”
The Trump administration has said it is in a ceasefire with Iran despite skirmishes with Tehran’s military on several occasions. On Tuesday, the U.S. military helped down multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and shot down several Tehran drones. But President Trump warned earlier this week that if Iran kills U.S. troops, that would be a “good reason” to restart the war with Tehran.
The White House is attempting to strike a memorandum of understanding with Iran to end the conflict and kick-start talks over the country’s nuclear program.
Trump said in an interview with NBC News’s “Meet The Press” that Iran has not struck a deal with the U.S. because “they’re strong” and “proud.”
During an event Friday in Wisconsin, the president said the Iran war is “largely finished,” although he indicated the war could be wrapped up a “more difficult way” than with diplomatic talks.
“One way or the other, it’s finished,” Trump said. “It’s either finished with a piece of paper, or finished a more difficult way, although you could say a much easier way.”
Mohsen Rezaei, military adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, said in an interview Friday with CNN that U.S. and Iran talks depend on the administration’s willingness to $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets and that Washington would “enter into a dark corridor” if kinetic action restarts.
ADVERTISEMENT“The negotiations are at a deadlock and Trump must break this deadlock,” Rezaei told CNN in Tehran. “The ball is in Trump’s court.”
