Former UK Mayor Tries to Secure Visas For 41 Relatives and Friends in Bangladesh

A former Labour mayor abused his mayoral office to try and get immigration visas to bring 41 family members and friends over from Bangladesh, it has been revealed.

Councillor Mohammad Amirul Islam, is alleged to have sent “official” as well as “doctored” letters featuring the Enfield Council logo to the British High Commission in Dhaka in the hopes of the visa documents being treated “favourably,” according to The Telegraph.

Councillor Islam was elected as Mayor of Enfield in north London in 2024 but was replaced earlier this year….

Goodness, that was a short stint, from 2024 to early in 2025. Was his hand caught in the till? Did he engage for the mayor’s office the accounting or janitorial services of his brother-in-law? Did he press upon a female staff member the possibility of a promotion if she accepted his well-meaning offer of a sexual dalliance? Or was he “working” from home because he claimed he still had Covid? One would like to know the circumstances of his leaving the mayor’s office..

Mohammad Islam made much of his becoming Mayor of Enfield, noting that he wanted the visas so that those 41 friends and family members could attend his inauguration. But that was not all he had in mind. Once in the UK, those 41 Bangladeshis would no doubt choose to remain, and he would do whatever he could to make sure they were not deported, but, like so many Muslim economic migrants, could batten on the benefits the generous British welfare state provides. Fortunately, alert staff at the British Embassy in Dhaka detected his little scheme in time, and put the kibosh on the issuance of those 41 visas.

Councillor Islam was required to undergo “further training on the Code of Conduct”, issue an apology and “not wear his Past Mayor’s Badge again”.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Councillor Islam – who is now an independent councillor – stood firm that he had done nothing wrong….

Upon being elected as Mayor of Enfield last year, Councillor Islam said: “It is an honour and privilege to have been elected as Mayor of Enfield for the forthcoming year.

“Our borough is diverse and welcoming, and I am looking forward to promoting what makes Enfield great.”

Think of the two rival political clans in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Zia and the Sheikh families, who until recently alternated as rulers of the country. In Indonesia, the two powerful political families are those of former president Joko Widodo and the newly-elected President Prabowo Subianto. The Assad family, Hafez and then his son Bashar, ruled Syria for fifty years. In Iran, the likely successor to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, is his second son, Mojtaba. Muslim leaders at every level are expected to use their office to help their families to power, to money, or even, as in this lowly case involving Councillor and former Mayor Mohammad Islam, to visas that, had they been granted, would have led to their permanent stay in much-too-accommodating Great Britain.
