Former Iranian crown prince says Tehran regime on the brink of collapse

i24NEWS,

Story continues below advertisement
‘People smell the opportunity for the first time in 40 years,’ Reza Pahlavi says

Former Iranian crown prince Reza Pahlavi estimated that the Islamic Republic regime could be months away from collapse but emphasized the importance of Western democracies providing aid in achieving that goal.

At an event hosted by the Hudson Institute, a Washington-based think tank, the son of Iran’s late Shah said on Wednesday that the present atmosphere in his home country reminds him of the days before his father was overthrown in 1978.

“People smell the opportunity for the first time in 40 years,” he said as cited by The Jerusalem Post.

“This time is very different from 2009, even very different from 1997. The people have had it. Today’s generation of young Iranians cannot take it anymore. They want to have an opportunity for a better future. They want to be on the path of modernity and freedom. The only thing that stands between them and the free world is this regime.”

Pahlavi further outlined his plan for regime change, which would see Iran turn into a “multiparty system.” He urged Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to stand back in order to “facilitate a smoother transition based on my strategy of nonviolent civil disobedience.”

The former crown prince, who now lives in Maryland, stressed he is not interested in going back to Iran to reclaim his throne.

Speaking to the conservative National Interest, he said that “I’d like to be on this side of the fence, facing the authorities and defending people’s rights so that we can establish a true democracy rather than to be in a position of governance or authority, having to be accountable to the people.”

I don’t think they are on the verge of collapsing. The people are unarmed, and therefore can always be subdued, and the regime is not without its supporters.

Anything can happen when people get to the point of sacrificing their lives to defend their liberty. When your only response to insurrection is wholesale slaughter and all you have to offer is abject poverty, you may be looking for a nice neutral country to escape to.

The Iranian regime is ruthless. That was why they were so attached to General Soleimani, he was absolutely ruthless. I don’t think he had a military education, but rose through the ranks of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps due to being absolutely ruthless.

The rest of the Guard is ruthless as well and the leaders in the regime are looking for the most ruthless people to replace Soleimani.

If a regime is willing to eliminate all opposition, and that means execution, they will likely remain in control, simply by killing anyone that’s in the opposition.

The regime executed about thirty thousand political prisoners around thirty years ago. Those were extra-judicial executions, although if the regime controls the judicial system, that’s it’s not an independent judicial system, then trials simply become show trials, as in the Soviet Union under Joe Stalin. People were in the gulag, underwent torture or their families were threatened, perhaps executed, and they were willing to confess to every charge. It didn’t matter, they were essentially all executed anyway, but the government wanted a confession prior to execution for political purposes.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is every bit as willing to carry out enforcement as was any organization of an authoritarian or dictatorial state in the past or present.

There is no opposition in North Korea to the regime. It is in total control of the population.

China is similar, although there have been freedom movements in the past, such as at Tinnanman Square, but after many people were killed, estimates from a few hundred to up to fifty thousand, there was never any public freedom movement that I’m aware of. Although there are demonstrations and protests in Hong Kong, that’s likely a special case, since there was an agreement in the past for a one state, two system program, although even that is likely to end when the 50 year moratorium ends. The central government has been attempting to impose it’s authoritarianism on Hong Kong for years and likely they’ll eventually succeed. Even now, China is developing into a pervasive surveillance state with a social credit system, almost total cashless to enable seeing what people are buying and selling, and widespread facial recognition cameras, which the Chinese are investing heavily in. They also have a very extensive system of police, and little freedom of movement.
Even dog owners must follow the regulations about pets closely, or the government will take away their pet.

The tools of the surveillance state are in a rapid state of development and the governments that control them are developing ever more impersonal methods of enforcement, so effective opposition to a committed authoritarian dictatorial or tyranical form of government is unlikely to ever end through an indigenous movement.

Good comment ! Totalitarian regimes see pacifism as weakness and do not disarm populations for the fun of it. Talk to anyone who lived in the USSR, China in the 1950s/60s, Cuba in the late 20th, or Iran/NK etc and they will tell you that resistance was futile.

Thanks for the response.

Bloomberg is heavily invested in China, with thousands, I have heard 20 K employees, and also

has invested in Chinese bonds and is involved in keeping the Chinese government afloat.

I don’t know how many billions of dollars worth of bonds he has with China. I think I’ve seen his worth mentioned as 58 billion dollars, but am sure I don’t have it exact.

Mark Levin on his radio program was giving a review of Bloomberg’s China connections.

I wasn’t acquainted with them and know little about the man myself.

The news media doesn’t seem to be covering it much.

He has entered the US Presidential race and his main campaign object as I see it is gun confiscation, or ending private firearm ownership in the US.

There is essentially no private firearms ownership in China.

I live in WA state where Bloomberg has spent millions to get initiatives passed on gun restriction over the past few years. Two are 594 and this year 1639. The initiatives were challenged as unconstitutional and signatures illegally collected (one still in court). Why would a New Yorker interfere with WA? Strategically, WA, OR and Colorado usher in new laws and then it spreads around the country.

Sadam Hussain’s Republican Guard was supposed to be tough and ruthless too until they met General Norman Shwartscoff and they went squealing like little girls.

StevenRobert
StevenRobert

They were ruthless with their own people, using poison gas on the Kurds, suppressing dissent. What it amounts to is bullying the defenseless, but when there’s some real challenges, then I agree, they faded, although there were pitched battles by Sadat Hussein’s troops at times and there were American casualties. American and coalition firepower was so overwhelming, open warfare was futile. The new style of warfare has become ambushes, IED’s “blue on blue” as in Afghanistan, and terrorism against civilian populations. Saddam Hussein’s regime essentially engaged in terrorism against its own people.

Ghandi was a joke and the British used him more than he used them(read Orwell’s comments on him as he worked in India). Passive resistance vs totalitarian regimes is pointless as they just see such as easy meat and history is 100% on that point. The British unlike many western nations did try to show a liberal glove in the colonies but the steel fist was always under it.

The military is the real power because the people have no guns so they will be dominated by whoever controls the military. USA freedom was achieved with guns and the 2nd amendment keeps us free. Iran will be controlled by either a monarchy or theocracy unless somebody can explain how they could have a third alternative?

The Shah’s son, what kind of ruler would he be…like his father who westernized Iran, look at past pictures before Carter ruined the Middle East and help having the Shah removed and instilled the idiots who made Iran what it is today. It will be the younger generation that either destroys Islam’s practices and or embraces them depending on which group wins and how they want Islam to be if at all.

Warfare should never be limited. If you engage another country in war you need to be “in it to win it”. It’s when the politicians get involved it becomes a limited quagmire.

Cars have batteries full of acid that can be used as a weapon. Fertilizer can be mixed with diesel fuel to make high explosives. There are dozens of innocent items one can buy at the supermarket or the hardware store to make some very powerful weapons. Our government should be providing the people of Iran with instructions on how to make their own weaponry. Once some of the Iranian guard ar killed, their weapons can be used to kill more. These methods were used by the French resistance in WWII. They really screwed up the Germans.

There were only 1800 in the French Resistance. Their biggest fear was being turned in by fellow French. Their impact, for the most part, was small. Hollywood, much like TV series, creates its own version of fact and history.

It will be very tough to over throw the present leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran. That leadership consists of Ayatollahs and other Islamic Clerics who will fight hard to maintain their power and control. The likely result of this will be a lot of Iranian people will be killed for the Ayatollahs and Islamic Clerics to maintain their control of Iran. Personally I hope that this leadership of Iran can be over thrown and removed from power.

Do not hold your breath on the expectation that what this article claims will happen. You will asphyxiate yourself. As long as the Mullahs have the military on their side, they will never let any harm come to this religiously run despotic country, and no republic is in their future. Money always talks, but Guns control, and right now the citizens of this country do not have guns to defend themselves; therefore no chance for change.

I disagree with Mr.Pahlavi’s rather optimistic assessment. While I do agree that the Iranian people in general, seem to be fed up with the mullahs rule, the bottom line is simple. The mullahs control the IRGC and the military. The IRGC in particular, is full of zealots who have no problem shooting/killing their own people at the behest of the mullahs and have proven this time and time again. Plain and simple, the mullahs will see the streets run red with blood before they EVER give up what they see as their divine right to rule.

They may want a new group of Mullahs there but they do not want a free country. When given freedom, Iraq and Afghanistan, the culture reverts to tribal feuds and attacks on any and every other group. Their religion does not accept personal freedom, but dictatorial direction from their Imams. It will not change until Islam ends, which will be after the return of Christ

The West can win over the Middle East but the West must change; the West must first ban Islam and demolition all Mosques in the West because Islam is the religion of Satan. The West should stay away from military interventions in the Middle East until this is achieved because the West will need a strong moral spirit to defeat the evil Muslims.

It can happen, and I would not like to predict, but I have before me the example of Venezuela. As long as the army is prepared to shoot down its own citizens, the regime will continue. A festering heap of injustice and poverty to be sure, but it will continue.
Look at Ireland, the first thing the English did was disarm the people and it took nearly 800 years to get independent again. The men of 1916 had to raid police stations to get guns, they had to smuggle them in from abroad. The best known brigade Barry’s column had about 100, one hundred, rifles. England had tens of thousands.

Revolutions of disarmed citizens against armed military have taken place in the past. France for one, Russia, and Iran for another. Its the weight of the population willing to sacrifice themselves that causes the overthrow, so there its a chance since the Iranian people seem willing to do what they must.

When the shah was toppled, it was the people against the military. Eventually those controlling the shah’s military saw the writing on the wall and got out of the country leaving the army leaderless.

I have a feeling that though Reza Pahlavi says he won’t go back, in the back of his mind he wants to be the reluctant leader brought back to lead the country. I very much believe he won’t be extended the invitation.
