CNN: “What should you do if you witness a racist or Islamophobic tirade?”

34

CNN wouldn’t dream of running a story entitled, “What should you do if you witness an Islamic jihad plot?,” or “What should you do if you witness Sharia-based abuse of women?” For the enemedia, Muslims are and can only be victims. And they’re still pushing the Portland killings as an instance of “Islamophobia,” which they weren’t.

“What should you do if you witness a racist or Islamophobic tirade?,” by Holly Yan, CNN, May 29, 2017 (thanks to Mark):

(CNN)It’s an instinct that comes naturally to good Samaritans: When you see one stranger attacking another with racist or religious epithets, you try to protect the victim.

Story continues below advertisement

But when two men did exactly that on a Portland train, they were stabbed to death.

So what is a bystander to do? Should you confront the attacker and try to de-escalate the situation? Or should you avoid getting involved?

“This is a profound dilemma for the general public,” said Andrew J. Scott, a retired police chief and president of AJS Consulting.

There is no easy answer for every situation. But here are how a few recent cases have turned out, and what Scott recommends you consider if you do decide to intervene:

The triple stabbing in Portland

Rick Best, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche and Micah Fletcher saw two girls being berated on a Portland light rail train. They didn’t sit still.

A man was confronting the two teens — including one who was wearing a hijab — and started spouting “hate speech toward a variety of ethnicities and religions,” Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson said.

“He told us to go back to Saudi Arabia and he told us we shouldn’t be here, to get out of his country,” Destinee Mangum, 16, told CNN affiliate KPTV of the experience.

When the trio of men tried to calm the suspect, all three were stabbed. Best and Meche died; Fletcher was stabbed 1 millimeter away from his jugular.

Scott said it’s likely difficult, if not impossible, for those good Samaritans to have predicted the the assailant would try to kill them.

“In this society, we’re raised to not allow bullies to engage in racist behavior and to intervene verbally,” Scott said. “Bullies tend to back down when verbally challenged.”

But with the Portland incident, “Clearly this is not the case,” Scott said. “(The assailant) is a sociopath or a psychopath, and it’s not the norm.”

The more peaceful endings

There are many more cases that don’t end in violence.

On May 22, a woman at an Arkansas Walmart told another customer to “go back to Mexico.” When a black customer told the woman to stop being ignorant, the woman started calling her the N-word.
Walmart later asked the woman to stop shopping at its stores.

What to make of these viral racist tirades?

Sometimes, the interventions lead to praise and reward. In March, Tracey Tong confronted a woman on a New York subway who was berating another passenger she believed was Muslim.

“Why are you here? Why are you in this country?” the woman asked. “You’re not with us.”

Tong fired back at the instigator. “Don’t start attacking an innocent woman,” she said. “… I’m not telling you to be quiet. I’m asking you to please respect her.”

The video was shared on Facebook more than 20,000 times, and Tong was invited on “The Ellen Degeneres” show, where she received a $10,000 reward.

So what should you do?

Scott, who worked in law enforcement for three decades, said ultimately the decision on whether to intervene is a highly personal one….

Three men confront one man who is practicing his free speech which he has a right to do. They cornered him by approaching and crowding him which caused him to fear for his physical well being he fought back abet using an inappropriate amount of force. They escalated the situation they didn’t calm him. The categorization of his speech as being hate speech is a misnomer there is no hate speech law in US

Plausible argument. I have not seen Tri-Met video, which might conflict with the narrative.

I have. He was mouthing off, language riddled with fbombs, and he demanded to be left alone. The man was clearly upset and ranting. Then three guys decided he needed to shut up. They cornered him, started arguing when him, then decided to subdue him. The women were safely in a different area – and the parts I watched, his “threats,” were vague and unfocused. Honestly, I saw no crime that could have even gotten the guy banned from the train. But these men decided this guy needed to shut up, and decided to make him.

If anything, all I see is three men who could have faced charges at the station.

Not a plausible argument but sly sophistry. For every right under the Constitution there is a responsibility. The same applies to First Amenment free speech, the classic example being that it is not protected speech to yell “Fire!” in a crowded theater.

Public safety being the only exception to the 1st – according to F. Frankfurter in the ’30s – there is no other, especially if you just plain don’t agree w/ someone. Let the negative bullshit slide and drive on w/ your life. There is more opportunity, industriousness, and just plain capital here than anywhere else. The only limits to your success is those you impose on yourself, regardless of race or ethnicity.

If you make a “credible threat” of violence against another individual, that is not protected speech; credible means you have means, motive, and opportunity. Holding someone up to public ridicule is another exception under which political candidates, even though public persons, have found relief in the courts. I hold a concealed handgun permit but can only use it to stop a credible threat of harm to myself or those nearby; no shooting of a fleeing suspect since he or she is no longer a threat, for example, or shooting someone over a perceived verbal insult or because I do not like their looks.

I was a sophomore in high school when JFK was assassinated and it became common knowledge that threatening the life of the President, directly or indirectly, no matter the person or personality, was a crime.

It might be more accurate to say that for every right there is a limit. For example a court applying a rational basis test on some government restriction, or applying strict scrutiny – on government action. The First Amendment does not impose any “responsibility” on any private citizen. It is a limit on government imposition on people. Search on second amendment penumbra.

In private life among private individuals there are limits, as noted in the plausible argument in the comment above, that included a reference to “inappropriate amount of force” in response to a threat.

Deploying bumper sticker sophistry is dangerous. Muslims in particular use the notion of a “responsibility” to say that something like the First Amendment does not prohibit the enforcement of the Sharia (death) for blasphemy or apostasy. It fully erases, or ignores, the First Amendment.

The responsibility is a reflection of community standards. In ours, a civilized society, certain standards of conduct as I outlined are necessary for society to function with a degree of civility. It is why we decide office holders by ballots and not bullets as some banana republics do. Until very recently, in Mexico any candidate who ran against the PRI party candidate and looked to be a formidable foe, usually wound up at the bottom of a well somewhere or simply disappeared altogether.

Notice the brilliant manipulation of these bastards – They intentionally injected ‘racists’ before ‘islamophobic’ so as to lend legitimacy to ‘islamophobic’ case. Had they only used islamophobic point, they know fully well that it would have been difficult to push. Their whole game was to bolster the anti-islamophobia case, for which they piggybacked on racism.

I have to say, they might be criminal, but they are not stupid.

Generally, avoid confrontation, and report it to the police if possible. Confrontation and intervention is very difficult and dangerous even for professionals.

One of the officers I knew was so good at his job that he talked a murder suspect into surrendering peacefully without having to draw his weapon.

IF one of the three men had walked over and just talked to the guy, been a friend, it would have ended with no violence at all. They decided to Confront the man for his Hate Speech, and try to shut him up.

If I hear someone engaged in a rant, and he’s clearly not a threat, then I keep my mouth shut unless he is clearly violent or looking to hurt someone. These men were not heroes, they were stupid.

Its up to each individual when faced with a situation such as this one as to how to react. As for me I’m walking right on by. I’ll not say a word either. You wanna berate or kill each other over your religious beliefs or your right to Freedom of Speech, then go right ahead, be my guest I’ll sit and watch.

All crime is Hate Crime – regardless of the victim’s or perp’s race. There is no such thing as Hate Speech. The first ammendment guarantees everyone’s right to be an asshole if they wish. You cannot legislate against “hurt feelings”, either, w/ out violating the Bill o’ Rights 3 ways from Sunday. Minorities need to get the race chip off their shoulder and thank God they live in America, where the standard of living, per any given racial group, is higher now than it has ever been, and indeed is the highest in the history of the world. Shut your suck and go to work – all the while thankful for our economy and the umbrella of safety provided by the world’s best soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and coast guard personel.
