• Shift in Demographic Data: Analyses of March 2025 casualty updates show that Hamas’s previously reported figures—which alleged 70% of casualties were women and children—changed, with updated lists indicating that approximately 72% of fatalities within specific age groups (13–55) are men, a demographic that aligns with Hamas combatants.
• Removal of Names: Hamas quietly removed the names of thousands of Palestinians (previously estimated at 3,400) from their “identified” death lists, including over 1,000 children, suggesting earlier data was fictional, according to research by Salo Aizenberg of Honest Reporting.
• Combatant Percentage Estimates: While the 80% figure is a subject of debate in analysis, various reports based on Hamas’s own data revisions suggest the civilian-to-combatant death ratio has moved closer to 1:1, a notably low ratio for urban warfare, suggesting a high number of militants among the casualties.
• Inclusion of Non-Direct Deaths: Reports suggest that the Hamas-run MoH casualty lists have included “natural deaths” that occurred during the war, along with deaths caused by misfired Palestinian rockets.

Methodological Challenges:
It is important to note that Hamas-run MoH figures have been criticized for not distinguishing between combatants and civilians. The UN and other organizations have previously used the Hamas-run MoH numbers while noting that they are unverified. The recent revisions by Hamas are viewed by some analysts as an attempt to “thin out the names they cannot substantiate at all”.
