Minnesota Middle School Faculty Supervise Eagle Ridge Students Walk Out to Protest ICE

19

Students at Eagle Ridge Middle School in Minnesota participated in an anti-ICE protest during the school day, chanting slogans including “We hate ICE,” while remaining on school grounds under staff supervision. This school has a 27% math proficiency and a 38% reading proficiency. But they are being taught to be terrorists.

Principal Dave Helke informed families that students would not be prevented from leaving class to protest, provided they stayed on campus, and that school staff would monitor the activity. The school’s reported academic proficiency rates — approximately 27% in math and 38% in reading — have fueled criticism from some who argue that schools should prioritize academics over political activism. Ya think?

The school said it will not prevent students from participating as they stay on school grounds. Staff will supervise, students will be marked absent for the class period they miss, and normal school rules and attendance policies will apply.
