The Mexican state of Jalisco, located on the Western coast in central Mexico, has erupted in violence after the Mexican military executed an operation that resulted in his death. American tourists have been told to shelter in place, and air traffic has been diverted away.
- Widespread road blockades (over 250 reported across ~20 states), often involving torched vehicles, buses, and businesses.
- Clashes with security forces, arson attacks, and chaos in key areas like Guadalajara (Jalisco’s capital, which turned into a near-ghost town) and the tourist hotspot Puerto Vallarta.
- Schools canceled in several states, airports disrupted (e.g., flight cancellations/suspensions to Puerto Vallarta), and people urged to stay indoors.
Mexico — Mexico’s most powerful drug kingpin, the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed by Mexican security forces on Sunday, Mexican defense officials said. The killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” represents a major show of force by the country’s military as President Donald Trump continues to pressure the United States’ southern neighbor to do more to fight its drug trafficking organizations. Oseguera, one of the most wanted fugitives in Mexico, was a founder of the New Generation cartel, which has grown to become one of the most powerful and violent organizations in Mexico, trafficking large quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine into the U.S. … The cartel leader’s killing immediately set off a wave of violence in areas controlled by the cartel, with reports of burning cars blocking roads. In Guadalajara, the capital city of the western state of Jalisco and one of the host cities of the upcoming World Cup, businesses were shut down, sirens and helicopters could be heard in the city center, and residents were warned to stay inside. On the ground right now (as of early February 23, 2026):
- CJNG responded with rapid, coordinated retaliation: suspected members set up road blockades using torched vehicles (cars, buses, trucks), arson on businesses/gas stations/malls, and clashes with security forces. Over 250 blockades were reported across ~20 states at peak, including Jalisco (epicenter), Colima, Michoacán, Nayarit, Guanajuato, Tamaulipas, and others.
- Major chaos in key spots:
- Guadalajara (Jalisco capital): Turned into a near-ghost town with people sheltering indoors; streets empty, schools canceled Monday in several states.
- Puerto Vallarta (major tourist/resort area): Smoke from burning vehicles, explosions reported, gunmen clashing with forces. Airport (PVR) saw panic—people sprinting through terminals; many flights canceled/diverted/suspended (international ones heavily hit, airlines like Air Canada, United, Delta, American, Alaska affected). Ride-shares halted, tourists stranded and advised to stay in hotels.
- Casualties: At least 14+ killed in clashes Sunday (including some National Guard troops), plus cartel members in the initial raid. Reports of hostages in some areas, though details vary.
- President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm, praised the armed forces, and said most blockades have now been cleared by security teams. She emphasized coordination between federal/state authorities and that “most of the country is operating normally.” She’s historically critical of “kingpin” strategies (targeting top leaders) because they often cause splintering and more violence—exactly what’s unfolding here.
