It didn’t take long for Washington Post publisher and CEO Will Lewis to abruptly step down, just days after the paper laid off roughly 300 staffers. Like a lemming off a cliff, this schmuck followed them out the door.
One small step for WaPo, one giant step for a free and fair press.
The departure, first reported by the New York Post, comes amid a sweeping restructuring at the Jeff Bezos–owned outlet, which has struggled with declining readership and revenue.
The Post announced that Lewis’s resignation was effective immediately. He will be replaced on an interim basis by Jeff D’Onofrio, the former Tumblr CEO who joined the paper in June as chief financial officer. Lewis characterized his exit as the culmination of a painful but necessary transformation, saying that after two years at the helm, “now is the right time for me to step aside.”
After sending over 300 so-called “journalists” to the unemployment office to compete for jobs as baristas (a job that probably requires useful skills unknown to them), the Washington Post’s publisher, Will Lewis, has decided to follow them out the door. New York Post: Washington Post CEO Will Lewis stepped down from his position on Saturday — throwing the prestigious Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper into further turmoil just days after the publication laid off some 300 staffers. The Washington Post announced that Lewis would be resigning effective immediately. He was succeeded by Jeff D’Onofrio, the former Tumblr CEO who joined the newspaper this past June as its chief financial officer. D’Onofrio will assume the role of acting publisher and CEO. Lewis framed his departure as the culmination of a difficult but necessary transformation, saying “now is the right time for me to step aside” after two years leading The Washington Post. Peggy Noonan Worries That Newspapers Will Disappear and People Will No Longer Be Fed Hoaxes
Peggy Noonan has been ridiculed on X for her lament over the Washington Post’s near collapse. Noonan worries that without journalists, Americans won’t be informed. Noonan at Wall Street Journal: I fear sometimes that few people really care about journalism, but we are dead without it. Someday something bad will happen, something terrible on a national scale, and the thing we’ll need most, literally to survive, is information. Reliable information—a way to get it, and then to get it to the public. That is what journalism is, getting the information. You have to think of it as part of your country’s survival system. Maybe the government will or won’t tell you the truth about what’s going on, maybe the Pentagon will or won’t, but if you know you’ve got this fabulous island of broken toys, professional journalists working for a reputable news organization, you’ve got a real chance of learning what’s true. (Wall Street Journal) Noonan apparently still believes the Steele Dossier is real, Biden was “sharp as a tack,” a Racoon Dog started COVID, social distancing is “science,” the Covington Kids are Nazis, and that Jussie Smollett was attacked by white supremacists in MAGA Country.
