According to CBS News, the United States and Denmark still have “fundamental” disagreements over Greenland’s future, but discussions will continue following a White House meeting this week. Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, described the talks as “frank but constructive,” focused on Greenland’s long-term security. The meeting included Greenland’s foreign minister, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and senior U.S. officials—underscoring the seriousness with which Washington is treating the issue.

President Trump has made clear he is not prepared to limit U.S. options. When pressed by a reporter on whether the United States might acquire Greenland by force—an act involving a NATO country—Trump rejected the premise outright, refusing to be boxed in or to telegraph strategy. Asked whether he would leave NATO to secure Greenland, Trump again declined to rule anything out, stressing instead Greenland’s centrality to U.S. and allied security.
Later that day, Trump stated bluntly that the United States needs Greenland for national security, calling it vital to the “Golden Dome” missile defense architecture now under development. He added that NATO should be leading efforts to facilitate U.S. control of the Arctic island.
The message is clear: Greenland is no longer a hypothetical or symbolic issue. In Trump’s strategic calculus, it is a critical asset—and the administration intends to pursue it with seriousness, leverage, and options intact.
