At least 42 people were slaughtered and others abducted when armed bandits stormed a crowded market in Niger State, northwest Nigeria, opening fire indiscriminately, burning stalls, and looting food as terrified civilians fled. Witnesses say women and children were not spared and that security forces were nowhere to be seen as raids spread across multiple villages, with some estimating the death toll as high as 40. The massacre underscores the accelerating collapse of security across northern and central Nigeria, where mass killings and kidnappings have become routine despite repeated military operations. President Bola Tinubu has ordered authorities to hunt down the perpetrators and rescue abductees, but the bloodshed comes just weeks after more than 300 children were kidnapped from a Catholic school—grim proof that banditry is spiraling out of control while the state struggles to protect its people.

30 slaughtered, scores abducted as bandits raze Niger market
By Timothy Enietan-Matthews, Ripples Nigeria, January 4, 2025:
A dark cloud has descended over Niger State following a savage weekend attack on a local market that left at least 30 villagers dead and many others missing.
On Saturday afternoon, the tranquility of the Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, Kabe District, was shattered when heavily armed men—suspected to be bandits operating from the dense cover of the Kainji Lake National Park —launched a coordinated assault on traders and shoppers.
Witnesses described a scene of absolute carnage as the gunmen emerged from the forest around 4:30 p.m. The attackers did not only focus on killing; they systematically looted shops and set the entire market ablaze, destroying the primary economic hub of the Borgu Local Government Area.
ADVERTISEMENTSurvivors recounted how the bandits shot indiscriminately at fleeing villagers before herding scores of captives back toward the expansive National Park.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Condemns Niger Market Attack, Mourns 42 Victims
By: The Whistler, On Jan 5, 2026:
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) has condemned the recent terrorist attack on Kasuwan Daji Market in Niger State, in which suspected bandits reportedly killed more than 42 people, including women, and abducted several others.
Gunmen were said to have attacked the market in Demo community, Borgu Local Government Area, on January 3, 2026, opening fire on traders and residents, setting parts of the market ablaze and fleeing with an undisclosed number of abductees.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the senator described the attack as “heartbreaking, senseless and a tragic reminder of the worsening insecurity confronting many Nigerian communities.”
ADVERTISEMENT“My heart is heavy as I mourn the innocent men and women who were brutally murdered at Kasuwan Daji Market,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said.
“These were ordinary Nigerians going about their lawful activities, only to be cut down by evil forces that have no regard for human life.”
She expressed deep sympathy for the families of the victims, praying for strength and comfort for those who lost loved ones.
