It has now been revealed that Lakeshia M. Alston, who is running for office as a Republican in North Carolina’s Senate District 22, is not a Republican at all.
According to public voter registration records, Alston is a lifelong Democrat who has consistently voted Democratic since 2008.
Despite campaigning as a Republican, her voting history tells a very different story.

On December 17, Alston filed as the only Republican candidate for North Carolina State Senate District 22, a Durham-Wake County area where Democrats routinely win by huge margins, like incumbent Sophia Chitlik’s 86% in 2024. Her past voting records show participation in Democratic primaries since 2008, including 2024 and 2020, prompting accusations from conservatives that she’s a lifelong Democrat trying to sabotage the GOP in the March 3, 2026, primary. No other Republicans have filed yet, and critics call for the state party to investigate amid concerns over open primary tactics in safe Democratic seats.
