The willingness of young people to take to the streets makes you hope that this time is different: Strikes and protests in Iran spread nationwide on Monday, turning violent in several cities as nighttime crowds chanted against the ruling state and bazaar merchants vowed to continue their shutdowns and demonstrations into Tuesday. What began as anger over the surging price of the US dollar and the collapse of the rial has widened into a broader wave of unrest, moving beyond market corridors and into streets, squares and university campuses across multiple provinces (Iran Intl).
Wall Street Journal: Since the war, the government has been carrying out a widespread crackdown on dissidents, arresting opponents and executing more people this year than at any point in nearly four decades, in an effort to prevent a popular uprising. At the same time, it has tried to ease the pressure on some of its strict moral codes…. “The government is relying on patronage for its power base in the clergy and military,” said Saeid Golkar, an associate professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. For the rest of the population, its “only strategy is repression” (Wall Street Journal).
Today Iranian women joined the uprising. See how they are at the frontline and one woman leads, others follow.
