2 DEAD: Brown University Gunman Targeted Jewish Class, Allegedly Shouted in Arabic, Police and Media Refuse to Deny or Confirm

14

Reports and eyewitness accounts circulating since the Brown shooting claim the attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire. Police have not publicly confirmed the words, and most major outlets are using vague language like “he shouted something.” If authorities have audio, bodycam, or corroborated witness statements, they should release or formally clarify what was said—because it directly bears on motive and public safety.

They have a suspect and lord knows how much video footage from CCTV but the only thing they shared is a grainy, short clip of the killer from the back.

The shooting occurred in the classroom of Professor Rachel Friedberg…who is Jewish, part of the Program in Judaic Studies, and whose research focuses on the intersection of economics and Jewish Studies The classroom was specifically targeted. No other classrooms were targeted. Most of the students were Jewish and observed the Sabbath which is why they did not have their phones.

Government leaders have yet to release anything about the “person of interest” in custody.

One of the Brown students reported hearing the shooter speaking in Arabic.

A gunman opened fire with a handgun at Brown University late Saturday night, triggering a rapid police response and sending students fleeing as chaos erupted on campus just hours before the first night of Hanukkah. Witnesses reported that the shooter shouted “something” before firing, though authorities have not publicly specified what was said. The suspect was quickly subdued by law enforcement, and the campus was placed on lockdown as officers swept buildings for additional threats. While officials have released limited details about motive, the attack has intensified concerns about campus security, antisemitic violence, and the continued reluctance of authorities and media outlets to clearly disclose key facts as they emerge.

The attack happened Saturday afternoon around 4 p.m. in the Barus & Holley engineering building during a Principles of Economics session. Providence police described the suspect as a male in black with a rifle; a person of interest in his 20s was detained early Sunday at a hotel 20 miles away, though no charges have been filed and the gun remains missing. Brown canceled all remaining classes and exams, evacuated thousands, and President Christina Paxson called it a tragic time no one is prepared for, as survivors like Spencer Yang credited active shooter drills for helping them respond.
