One Day After Mamdani Win: New York’s Fire Commissioner Resigns

22

New York City Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker resigned on Wednesday, hours after Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the mayoral election, citing irreconcilable differences with Mamdani’s positions on Israel and Palestine. Tucker, a Jewish leader with a security firm operating in Israel, will leave his post effective December 19, becoming the first major change in the incoming administration.

He’s Jewish. He knows what’s coming.

Sources say Tucker’s departure was driven by deep concern over Mamdani’s anti-semitic ecord and refusal to condemn calls to “globalize the intifada.”

Tucker’s resignation marks the first high-profile exit under the new mayor-elect and a warning sign for Jewish New Yorkers about what’s coming next.

Robert Tucker is the city’s 35th Fire Commissioner—for whom this position was his “lifelong dream” (NYC).

On the morning after the Mamdani win, he tendered his resignation.

Fox News: In a statement, Tucker said he will remain on the job until Dec. 19, allowing the department to have “an orderly transition.” Mamdani is set to be sworn in on Jan. 1, 2026. “It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the 35th New York City Fire Commissioner,” Tucker said. “Thank you to Mayor Adams for his trust and confidence in doing this job. We empowered the brave men and women who keep our city safe, bringing fire-related deaths to a historic low.” “Commissioner Robert Tucker has led the Fire Department of the City of New York with courage, passion, and a sincere dedication to public safety,” Adams said. “When I appointed Commissioner Tucker to this critical role, I knew he’d have the experience, grit, and zeal to protect our city and support our fearless heroes – the firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics who put their lives on the line for New York every day” (Fox News).
