Israel’s Foreign Ministry has claimed that documents recovered in Gaza show Hamas has “direct involvement” in an aid flotilla, of which Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is a part, that is sailing toward the war-ravaged Strip.
ADVERTISEMENTThe flotilla, called Global Sumud, is made up of more than 50 boats carrying registered participants from 44 countries. Organisers say the mission aims to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is in the grip of famine under Israel’s blockade. Among the high-profile passengers are Thunberg and Zwelivelile Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela.
advertisementIsrael had previously dismissed the voyage as a “publicity stunt” and warned that its navy will act to prevent the boats from reaching Gaza. Now it claims to have uncovered something far more sinister.
Papers recovered by troops in Gaza “show a direct link between the flotilla leaders and the Hamas terrorist organization”, specifically its overseas arm, the Palestinian Conference for Palestinians (PCPA), Israeli Foreign Ministry alleged.
Israel designated PCPA a terror group in 2021, describing it as Hamas’ “representative body abroad” that organises protests, marches and flotillas under civilian cover.
One of the documents, the ministry said, is a 2021 letter signed by then-Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh endorsing the PCPA.
