ROYAL WELCOME: Saudi Arabia Pulls Out All the Stops For President Trump

13

This is not a political conference. This is a business conference. I do hope quiet conversations lead to Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords.

Even before leaving Washington, Trump had already secured an important win from Riyadh in the form of extra crude oil that has contributed to a drop in oil prices. The oil market was surprised in early April when a subset of eight members of the OPEC+ (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) producer group announced it would be increasing supply at triple the previously expected rate. That’s because the Saudi-led coalition had worked assiduously for more than a year to keep supply tight—twice postponing a program to very gradually add barrels until the market was strong enough to support the move. Suddenly, in early April (just as financial markets were reeling from the trade war), the producer group announced it would be hiking May output by 411,000 barrels per day—three times the volume it had previously publicized. And just last week, it doubled down, maintaining the faster supply rate for June (CSIS).

New York Times: President Trump will tour the Gulf this week in search of one thing above all else: business deals. Planes. Nuclear power. Artificial intelligence investments. Arms. Anything that puts a signature on the bottom of a page. While planning the first major overseas trip of his second term, a four-day swing through Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Trump told his advisers that he wanted to announce deals that would be worth more than $1 trillion (New York Times).

Arabian horses escort Trump’s Beast in Saudi Arabia, with Elon Musk in attendance

By Diana Glebova and Steven Nelson, NY Post, May 13, 2025:

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — President Trump got the royal treatment on his first stop in Saudi Arabia, as white Arabian horses flanked his motorcade — with adviser Elon Musk in tow.

Dozens of Saudis rode on horseback carrying US and Saudi flags as Trump’s motorcade peeled into the Royal Court, where he got a warm welcome before going to a lunch in the palace adorned with chandeliers and marble floors.

“I really believe we like each other a lot,” Trump told reporters after his arrival, referring to Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed bin Salman as a friend.

The lunch was attended by members of the Saudi government — as well as a number of tech billionaires and business leaders, including Musk, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, CEO of Boeing Kelly Ortberg, and more.

Other tech guests included Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, Palantir CEO Alex Karp, CIO of Google Ruth Porat, CEO of Blackstone Group Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of Coca-Cola James Quincey, LinkedIn Executive Chairman Reid Hoffman — and Miami mayor Francis Suarez.

Musk — who has taken one step back from the Department of Government Efficiency and is largely no longer working from the White House — was spotted shaking hands with Trump ally Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Trump patted Musk on the arm as the world’s richest man smiled and looked around the palace.

MbS smiled a wide smile as he spoke to the Trump aide.

Other industry leaders also got in line to speak with the president and MbS, who are later attending an investment conference dedicated to bringing in economic opportunities from major donors.

Members of Trump’s cabinet at the festivities included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
