Boston Mayor Michelle Wu offered “condolences” for the death of a knife-wielding attacker, sparking backlash online.

An off-duty police officer killed who police said was an attempted stabber during an altercation in a Chick-fil-A on Boylston Street in Boston on Saturday. The attacker tried to stab two people before he was shot.

Wu addressed the situation in remarks on Saturday, offering her “condolences” over the death of the knife-wielding man.

“My condolences and all of our thoughts are with family of the individual whose life has been lost,” Wu said at the start of her remarks during a press conference.

Police said the knife attacker was shot after two people ran inside the restaurant being chased by the man with the knife. An off-duty officer inside the restaurant told the man to drop his knife. The man refused, and the officer shot him. The man later died at a hospital.

Wu’s comments sparked backlash online after an account on X called “Bostonians Against Mayor Wu” posted a clip of her remarks online.
