Judge Merchan Adjourns Sentencing in Donald Trump’s “Hush Money” Case; AG Bragg Asks to Freeze Case for Four Years
Just the News: Donald Trump’s sentencing, scheduled for Nov. 26, has been adjourned with no explanation by the judge in his New York ‘hush money’ case. Judge Juan Merchan is still considering how to proceed with sentencing given that Trump is now the president-elect and is preparing to take office in January. The sentencing had already faced a delay from the judge as he considers whether to toss the charges. Merchan is also expected to decide whether to throw out the conviction in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity (Just the News).
Townhall: In 2023, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) charged Trump with 34 counts of Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree. Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges (Townhall).
New York Post: Manhattan prosecutors on Tuesday rebuffed President-elect Donald J. Trump’s request to dismiss his criminal conviction in the wake of his electoral victory, signaling instead their willingness to freeze the case while he holds office. In a letter to the judge overseeing the case, the prosecutors emphasized that a jury had already convicted Mr. Trump of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal. But acknowledging the unprecedented nature of the case — Mr. Trump would be the first felon to serve as president — the prosecutors raised the prospect of a four-year freeze (New York Post).
