Jim Justice Wins West Virginia, in First Senate Flip for GOP

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice won his state’s Senate race, flipping a crucial seat for the Republican party. Soon after voting concluded, the Associated Press projected him as the winner over Democrat Glenn Elliott.

Justice’s victory, which was widely expected, elevates him to national prominence and hands a Senate seat to the Republicans, who are battling to take back control of the chamber. The seat was one of a handful of vulnerable seats the party is hoping to flip tonight. Former President Donald Trump endorsed Justice, who is very popular in the state.

Justice entered the race last year in an attempt to unseat Sen. Joe Manchin, who later decided not to run for re-election. Heading into the election, Democrats have a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

Manchin left the Democratic party earlier this year to become an independent but still caucused with Democrats. He served three terms even as West Virginia became progressively more Republican. West Virginia voters elected Trump by nearly 39 points in the 2020 election. Manchin frequently clashed with other Senate Democrats as he sought to rein in spending plans and defended the 60-vote filibuster threshold in the Senate.

Justice owns a sprawling empire of coal mines, processing facilities and agricultural interests. The Justice empire is well-known across West Virginia for its hundreds of millions in unpaid loans. Still, his financial troubles haven’t dented his prospects. Justice, a 6-foot-7 Republican, has earned goodwill with voters by casting himself as a Chevrolet-driving everyman and a girls’ basketball coach. His English bulldog Babydog has also drawn a spotlight at events like the Republican National Convention this year.
