Investigators responding to arson fires at two ballot boxes in the Pacific Northwest this week found devices at both scenes marked with the words “Free Gaza,” according to two law enforcement officials. Investigators are trying to determine if the perpetrator was actually a pro-Palestinian activist or someone using that prominent cause to sow discord, one of the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. But the message has added a heightened layer of political sensitivity to a closely watched investigation in the final days of a tense presidential election. The fires both occurred early Monday within a short time of each other in Portland, Ore., and just across the state line in Vancouver, Wash. The “Free Gaza” message appeared not only on the two devices, which were discovered on Monday, but also on a device found at a third ballot box this month in Vancouver, according to the law enforcement officials. That device also had the words “Free Palestine” on it (New York Times)
If you burn down ballot boxes with the messages “Free Gaza” in Oregon, the local police will act as if the motive is unknown.
If you commit a hate crime against a Jewish American en route to a synagogue in Chicago, the local Mayor will act as if the motive is unknown.

. National Review: The auditor in Clark County, which includes Vancouver, said Monday that observers would be stationed to monitor all 22 ballot-box locations in the city 24 hours a day. Vancouver police also announced additional patrols to increase protection for the ballot boxes. Both Oregon and Washington fully rely on mail-in voting, requiring each resident to submit their ballot via mail or drop it off at a ballot box (National Review).

By Andy Ngo, NY Post, Oct. 29, 2024:Ballot boxes in Oregon and Washington may have been set on fire by an anti-Israel protester, as investigators found a note that said “ALL DROP BOXES WILL BURN. FREE GAZA,” The Post has learned.
Between 3 and 4 a.m. on Monday, fires caused by incendiary devices were discovered in ballot boxes in Vancouver, Wash. and neighboring Portland, Oregon.
A built-in fire suppressant stopped most of the flames at the Portland location, but hundreds of ballots were destroyed at the drop box at Fisher’s Landing Transit Center in Vancouver.

The Post has learned that ballot boxes in Oregon and Washington were possibly set on fire by an anti-Israel protester. Election officials and law enforcement have remained largely mum about their investigation.

But according to an election official with knowledge but not authorized to speak on record, a political letter was discovered in a ballot box at the Vancouver Mall Parking lot location just a few hours after the fires were put out.
According to the source, a white piece of paper folded in half had been deposited in the box.
It is not confirmed if the message came from the suspect involved in the arson fires, but the New York Times reports that all three incendiary devices themselves had the message “Free Gaza” written on them.
The shopping center drop box is less than 15 minutes by car from the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center, where one of the fires occurred.

The election source tells The Post that county and investigators have not publicly shared information about the investigation over fears it could keep voters from using the ballot boxes in the remaining days leading up to the election, or inspiring copycat attacks.
