A man reported to be a US serviceman has been attacked by a violent crowd in Izmir, Turkey who placed a sack over his head.

Shocking footage circulating on social media shows the man looking confused as he is mobbed by a group of shouting people in the street. As he is held back and restrained, a sack is placed over his head, and banner with the words ‘TGB’ is lifted up by a man in the background. The men then begin a chant of “Yankee, go home”. The alleged serviceman is understood to have been from the US Navy amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, which is in the region to support Israeli forces.

The clip has had more than 55,000 views on X, formerly Twitter. It emerges amid a rare general strike was held in Israel to protest the failure to return hostages held in Gaza. This led to disruptions around the country today, with banking, healthcare and travel industries all impacted. Airlines at Israel’s main international airport, Ben-Gurion, halted outgoing flights between 8am and 10am Those flights either departed early or were slightly delayed. The UK, meanwhile, has suspended some arms sales to Israel due to the Gaza conflict.

The USS Wasp arrived in the port of Izmir on Sunday for a scheduled visit, with sailors and marines taken on tours organised by the ship’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation team during while it is docked. Previously on a scheduled deployment to Europe, the Wasp was recently sent to the Mediterranean and Middle East amid rising tensions between Hezbollah and Israel along the border with Lebanon, and had made a stop in Turkey. It marked the first time that the Wasp had operated in the Mediterranean region since being moved back from Sasebo, Japan to Norfolk, Virginia in 2019.
