Iran Deploys Warship Destroyer to the Red Sea

After using Iranian proxies to attack US, European and Israel shipping vessels in the Red Sea, Iran is escalating the war in one of the world’s most critical waterways.

Oil prices rose nearly 2% at the start of the new year amid fears of supply disruptions with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, as well as expectations for strong holiday demand and an economic stimulus in China, a top importer of crude.

—Maersk has paused shipping through the Red Sea until further notice after one of its vessels came under attack from Houthi militants over the weekend.
—The decision by the Danish shipping giant extends a 48-hour pause implemented in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
—Repeated attacks by Houthi militants on vessels in the Red Sea have raised concerns about disruptions to global trade through the key waterway.

German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd said it will continue to avoid Red Sea transits and reroute its vessels around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa until at least Jan. 9 in response to recent attacks by Houthi militants.

Oil prices volatile as Iranian warship enters Red Sea after U.S. destroys Houthi boats

Iran on Monday announced it sent the Alborz destroyer through the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the country’s state media reported, without elaborating on details of the warship’s mission. It added that operations are periodically conducted in the Red Sea to secure shipping routes.

The move comes after the U.S. Navy destroyed three boats of Iran-backed Houthi rebels, killing 10 militants, according to an AP report. The Navy was responding to a distress call by Singapore-flagged vessel Maersk Hangzhou which had come under Houthi fire, the U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

In a statement by a rebel spokesman on Sunday, the Houthi group maintained that the boats were engaged in “official duties to secure maritime routes”, a news channel owned by the rebels stated.
