Target Revenue Down Nearly Five Percent from Last Year Amid Backlash from Controversial Merchandise

National Review: Target suffered a significant drop in third quarter sales after consumers rebelled against the retailer for its scandalous LGBT-themed merchandise. Sales dipped in June after the Target rolled out its Pride collection, which featured pro-gender transition clothing such as a “tuck-friendly” swimsuit to obscure male genitalia and children’s items from a brand that sells Satanist-inspired products. Target was fully aware of brand Abprallen’s Satanist-inspired merchandise, some of which glorifies violence against alleged “transphobes,” when it approved the collaboration. Target lost $9 billion in market value in about a week, with the stock falling from just over $160.00 to about $141.00 a share, amounting to a 12 percent drop. Target stock has decreased 16 percent so far this year (National Review).

Daily Wire: Online sales fell nearly twice as much, 10.5%, Target said. The company also said that the number of transactions and the average dollar amount of a transaction fell this past quarter. Target’s total revenue of $24.8 billion was 4.9 percent lower than last year (Daily Wire).

Target’s sales crumble for the first time in years amid backlash over LGBT kid merchandise

By Daily Caller, August 16, 2023:

Target reported Wednesday that it was lowering its sales and profit expectations for the rest of the year, with the company having faced conservative backlash earlier in the quarter over the release of LGBT products for kids, according to Target’s second quarter earnings report.

Target lowered its sales and profit expectations for the rest of the year after its quarterly sales fell for the first time in six years, declining 5.4%, while it announced it expected its share price to clock in between $7.00 to $8.00 as opposed to the previously expected $7.75 to $8.75, according to the earnings report. The decrease in expectations follows backlash from conservatives after the company announced a Pride Month collection in May that included LGBT merchandise marketed to kids.

“We continue to take a cautious approach to planning our business, and have therefore adjusted our financial guidance in anticipation of continued near-term challenges on the topline,” Brian Cornell, chair and chief executive of Target, said in the earnings report. “This approach, along with the long-term investments we’re making in our business and strategy, position us to deliver sustainable, profitable growth in the years ahead.”

Following the initial backlash and claims of threats by Target, the retailer removed some of the LGBT-themed items from stores. Prior to the backlash, the company carried over 2,000 products in its collection for Pride Month, including books, home furnishings and clothing for both kids and adults.
