I arrived in Paris yesterday and traveled to a city in the south of France. It’s one thing to read about it, another to see it with your own eyes. I walked through the streets of that southern city today. Shops destroyed, emptied of all contents: Swarovski, Orange, Apple stores. Most stores now boarded up. Will they dare to open on Monday? I don’t know. So far, 100 million euros of damage has been estimated; the amount is bound to rise.
An attempt to burn down the house of a mayor in the north; he happened to be at his office, but his wife and two small children were inside and escaped — just barely — with their lives.
About 50,000 extra police now on the streets. The Macron government still refuses to declare a state of emergency as politicians to his right have demanded. Macron condemned the policeman — a much decorated officer, with several medals for bravery — as guilty of an “inexplicable” and “unforgivable” act. As far the policeman is concerned, there is no presumption of innocence.

Mayor’s home ‘rammed’ and set on fire as France detains hundreds more protesters
The mayor of a Paris suburb has said his home was attacked early Sunday morning, calling it “an assassination attempt” on his family amid ongoing unrest in the country.
“At 1:30 a.m., while I was at the city hall like the past three nights, individuals rammed their car upon my residence before setting fire to it to burn my house, inside which my wife and my two young children slept,” said mayor Vincent Jeanbrun of L’Haÿ-les-Roses, a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, in a statement.
“While trying to protect the children and escape the attackers, my wife and one of my children were injured.”
Jeanbrun said that he had “no words strong enough to describe his emotion towards the horror of this night” and thanked police and rescue services for their help.
The Créteil prosecutor’s office has classified the incident as an “attempted murder,” prosecutor Stéphane Hardouin told reporters Sunday.
Hardouin said the initial findings of a police investigation suggest that a flaming car “was launched to burn down the pavilion,” entering Jeanbrun’s property at around 1:30am local time.
“Hitting a low wall, the vehicle stopped… before it could reach the veranda of the house. Only the front gate was hit, along with the family’s vehicle,” the prosecutor said in a news conference outside the mayor’s home.
He said the mayor’s wife and two children, aged 5 and 7, fled through the back garden. While running away, the mayor’s wife hurt her shin which “appears to be broken,” according to the prosecutor.
Hardouin also said forensic police have found a fire accelerant in a bottle of Coke. He didn’t specify which substance the accelerant was.
“Every effort will be made to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” the prosecutor concluded.

Probably not. It seems that everyone has bought into the myth that all cultures are equal and all people have the same values. In my experience in the past if you even mention to a French person that cultural differences preclude all people living happily together they immediately tell you that you are wrong and a bigot. Did the Americans shot the BLM rioters who were burning and looting in 2020? Self-défense does not work anymore even if it’s in the penal code. The response should be proportionate to the attack which means you should fire only after being shot. In France if you have a weapon in your possession the judge will tell you that you had the intent to harm your opponent!!!. A recent case in eastern France saw the inculpation of a jewellery shop owner for murder because he shot a burglar who was looting his store during the night. This shop owner had his store looted 3 times previously and could not get any insurance unless he converted his store into Fort Knox.
He was released because on the court date thousands of inhabitants of Épinal went in front of the tribunal asking his release.
