Freedom of speech is the foundation of a free society. Without it, a tyrant can wreak havoc unopposed, while his opponents are silenced.
Putting up with being offended is essential in a pluralistic society in which people differ on basic truths. If a group will not bear being offended without resorting to violence, that group will rule unopposed while everyone else lives in fear, while other groups curtail their activities to appease the violent group. This results in the violent group being able to tyrannize the others.
If speech that offends a group is outlawed, that group has absolute power, and a free society is destroyed. A group that cannot be criticized cannot be opposed. It can work its will no matter what it is, and no one will be able to say anything to stop it.

Inoffensive speech needs no protection. The First Amendment was developed precisely in order to protect speech that was offensive to some, in order to prevent those who had power from claiming they were offended by speech opposing them and silencing the powerless.
A free society is by its nature one in which people put up with others being uncivil and offensive. The alternative is a quiet authoritarian society in which only one opinion is allowed and the others are silenced, and ultimately sent to the camps.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced “significant improvements” are coming to Twitter after Parag Agrawal, the company’s chief executive, announced they are appointing Musk to the board of directors amid his newfound status as the company’s single largest shareholder.
The announcement caused Twitter’s stock to soar 27 percent, as investor confidence was boosted by expectations of Musk’s future involvement in the company. The social media platform has received pushback over the past couple of years over its blatant censorship of conservative voices and Covid-19 content.
Musk has been a constant critic of the platform’s violation of free speech principles, leading to anticipation that he will take further steps to address the issue now that he is the largest shareholder in the company.
Surprisingly, Twitter’s CEO gave a warm welcome to Musk.
Agrawal expressed his excitement Tuesday about the change, writing, “I’m excited to share that we’re appointing @elonmusk to our board!” He explained that following recent conversations with Musk, “It became clear to us that he would bring great value to our Board.”
Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also released a public statement on Twitter’s new partnership with Musk, saying, “I’m really happy Elon is joining the Twitter board! He cares deeply about our world and Twitter’s role in it.” He added, “Parag and Elon both lead with their hearts, and they will be an incredible team.”
Musk replied to Agrawal’s announcement that he would be joining the board, stating, “Looking forward to working with Parag & Twitter board to make significant improvements to Twitter in coming months!”
While Musk has not yet announced what improvements Twitter will be implementing in the coming months, social media users are hopeful that this could mark the end of conservative censorship on Twitter.
Some users have already begun to call on Musk to reinstate the 45th president’s official Twitter account.
Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., tweeted, “Now that @ElonMusk is Twitter’s largest shareholder, it’s time to lift the political censorship. Oh… and BRING BACK TRUMP!”
President Donald Trump has previously expressed his support and admiration for Elon Musk. At a rally in South Carolina, Trump said, “Elon Musk is a guy that I like and respect.”
Although President Trump has not expressly requested to rejoin Twitter, it would be a strategic advantage for his reelection efforts if Musk were able to persuade the company to reinstate him.
