Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine in a surprise television announcement at roughly 6:00 a.m. Moscow time, 10:00 p.m. Eastern. The Russian President described the  attack as a “special military operation for the de-Militarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine.”

The bottom line is Putin knows America is weak. Biden’s secretary of defense and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are more worried “about “white privilege” and climate change than enhancing military readiness to deter enemies such as himself. Putin sees polls that only 45 percent of Americans have confidence in their new politicized military.” We are no longer a deterrence.

VDH: The flight from Afghanistan, Putin further conjectures, has made the United States both less feared by enemies and less trusted by allies. The prior failed American policy of Russian “reset,” the appeasement of Putin’s aggressions during the Obama years, together with the concocted hoax of “Russian collusion,” have all variously emboldened — and angered — Putin. He knows a twice-impeached Donald Trump left office unpopular. So he assumes with Trump gone, American deterrence against Russia also vanished.

Trump’s now rejected agenda was to increase American and NATO defenses and pump oil and gas to crash the global price of Russia’s chief source of foreign exchange.

Putin was once furious that Trump unilaterally left an asymmetrical U.S.-Russia missile accord. Trump ordered lethal force to be used against large numbers of Russian mercenaries who attacked a U.S. installation in Syria. He sold offensive weapons to Ukraine. He acted forcibly in taking out terrorist enemies such as Iran’s Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the Islamicist Abu al-Baghdadi and ISIS itself.

In any event, Ukraine is not a NATO member and has long been in the Russia sphere. No American blood should be spilled.

Putin declares war on Ukraine as deadly missile strikes plunge country into bloodshed

death toll continued to mount in the hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Wednesday night and launched airstrikes, ending weeks of diplomatic stalemate and plunging Eastern Europe into a nightmare of violence and bloodshed not seen since the darkest days of World War II.

More than 40 people in Ukraine were killed and several dozen injured after missiles strikes were launched, said Aleksey Arestovich, adviser to the head of the country’s presidential office.

Ukraine’s military said six Russian planes and one helicopter were shot down amid the ongoing aerial assault. The military also said four Russian tanks were destroyed and 50 troops were killed.

The attacks came first from the air. Later, Ukrainian authorities described ground invasions in multiple regions, and border guards released security camera footage Thursday showing a line of Russian military vehicles crossing into Ukraine’s government-held territory from Russian-annexed Crimea.

Putin claimed Russia was undertaking a “special military operation” to demilitarize and “denazify” the country under the pretense that Russia was defending itself.

Putin announced the operation in a live televised speech that aired before 6 a.m. local time, threatening countries that attempt to interfere with “consequences they have never seen.”
