Sweden Refused to Lockdown: They Were Right, New Cases Plunge, Very Ill Approach ZERO

41

“In many ways the voluntary measures we put in place in Sweden have been just as effective as complete lockdowns in other countries,” Anders Tegnell, the chief epidemiologist at Sweden’s public health agency,

Sweden is a case study in what to do next time. Their results are eye-opening Lockdowns, destroying our economy, millions unemployed, neighborhood Stasi, Covid Karens, — not necessary.

It’s what the rational among us have been reporting for months.

Story continues below advertisement

Bloomberg: As other countries face renewed outbreaks, Sweden’s latest Covid-19 figures suggest it’s rapidly bringing the virus under control.

“That Sweden has come down to these levels is very promising,” state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell told reporters in Stockholm on Tuesday.

The Health Agency of Sweden says that since hitting a peak in late June, the infection rate has fallen sharply. That’s amid an increase in testing over the period. “The curves are going down and the curves for the seriously ill are beginning to approach zero,” state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said.

Herd immunity.

Sweden COVID-19 Death Rate Lower Than Spain, Italy and U.K., Despite Never Having Lockdown (Newsweek)

While novel coronavirus cases have spiked across several parts of Europe, including Spain, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, Sweden—where a countrywide lockdown was never issued—continues to report a downward trend in new cases and new deaths.

……the infection rate has fallen sharply. That’s amid an increase in testing over the period. “The curves are going down and the curves for the seriously ill are beginning to approach zero,” Tegnell said.

Swedish Covid Cases Trend Down

The development follows months of controversy over Sweden’s decision to avoid a full lockdown. The unusual strategy coincided with a much higher Covid-19 mortality rate than elsewhere in the Nordic region. Per 100,000, Swedish deaths even exceeded those in the U.S. and Brazil.

I Looked Up What Happened When Sweden Refused To Shut Down – They Were Right, We Were Wrong

By Josh Manning, The Western Journal, Published August 1, 2020:

Sweden did it.

The Nordic country defeated COVID-19 without seeming to break a sweat — fever-induced or otherwise. They effectively showed that Fauci & Co. were completely wrong about a shutdown being necessary to save civilization as we know it.

While that accomplishment should be lauded and their efforts duplicated around the world, the media has instead chosen to blast the Nordic state and paint a dismal picture that simply doesn’t exist.

A few examples (among many, many others) are below:

CBS News declared: “Sweden becomes an example of how not to handle COVID-19.” Similarly, the University of Virginia Health System issued a news release titled: “Lack of Lockdown Increased COVID-19 Deaths in Sweden.”

Taking a stab at prognostication, Newsweek said: “Sweden COVID-19 Deaths Linked to Failure to Lockdown as Country Prepares for Second Wave.” Always eager to bravely embrace the status quo, The New York Times ran a piece headlined: “Sweden Tries Out a New Status: Pariah State.”

Finally, Business Insider reported: “Sweden’s coronavirus death toll is now approaching zero, but experts are warning others not to hail it as a success.”

It’s all awfully prickly from a leftist media that used to adore Sweden’s welfare state. The reason for the barbed headlines is simple — Sweden dealt with COVID-19 in its own way.

The country didn’t truckle to the tyranny of over-educated, under-experienced experts. It didn’t implement authoritarian policies designed as much to break spirits as to break the pandemic. And it didn’t turn its voters into quasi-prisoners.

In other words, Sweden responded more or less the way the rest of the developed world has responded to contagious diseases until 2020, which just happens to also be President Donald Trump’s re-election year.

What were Sweden’s results?

Well, first let’s consider American results brought to us courtesy of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, the establishment media, government officials around the country and legions of panic-prone and morally superior “Karens.”

All around the country, the U.S. tried just about every imaginable combination of mask, lockdown, quarantine, curfew and closures orders — up to and including literally refusing entry across some state lines to certain fellow Americans.

The results were, well, not what anyone wanted. As of Saturday, the U.S. coronavirus death rate was 3.35 new deaths per million per day (based on a seven-day rolling average), which ranks as the 11th worst rating on the planet, according to Our World in Data.

RELATED: Fatality Rates Show How Wrong the Media’s COVID Narrative Really Is

And remember, thanks in large part to the Andrew Cuomo nursing home/death camp model of virus containment, New York state accounts for more than a fifth of all U.S. COVID-19 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins data. So we’re probably getting dragged down a little in the ratings by the disproportionate number of deaths in that state.

What else has America’s scattershot, but mostly heavy-handed, response yielded? If you read The Wall Street Journal, you will learn it led to anywhere between 30 million and 40 million lost jobs. (Some of those workers have no doubt been rehired as parts of the economy reopen, but millions more haven’t. And economists don’t really know how many of those job losses are permanent.)

So we destroyed constitutional rights, shed a few dozen million jobs and watched tens of thousands of people die. Oh, and we turned Americans against each other, all the way from the state to family levels.

But at least gross domestic product didn’t take it too hard, right? Not exactly. Commerce Department numbers released Thursday revealed that the U.S. economy shrank by a record 32.9 percent last quarter in what Bloomberg called the “sharpest downturn since at least the 1940s.”

So what about those rebellious Swedes? The ones who refused to play ball with all-knowing scientists and a ridiculously tunnel-visioned medical establishment?

While much of the rest of the developed world drowned themselves in hand sanitizer, locked ankle monitors onto their citizens and bought super cute masks on Etsy, the stalwart Swedes pressed on.

They lived their lives.

They didn’t mandate masks. They didn’t turn into NKVD-aspiring Karens, eager to publicly shame or quietly narc on neighbors, friends and family who dared bare an uncovered nostril.

Sweden defied the (dare we say) scientific consensus and has performed exceedingly well compared to the U.S.

As of Saturday, Sweden had registered 0.65 deaths per million per day, based on a seven-day rolling average.

Trading Economics projects a second-quarter GDP change of -4.2 percent (and a third-quarter growth of 2.4 percent). Depending on your preferred method of calculation, we could casually say that’s 7.8 times better than what the U.S. saw last quarter.

As of June 18, Statista forecast a 2.6 percent drop in Sweden’s employment rate for 2020. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, meanwhile, reported unemployment in the U.S. shot up 11.2 percentage points from 3.5 percent in February to 14.7 percent in April, before dropping a bit to 13.3 percent in May and 11.7 percent in June as parts of the economy reopened.

Now we’re not going to be like the dogmatic pro-mask Stasi here. There are lots of factors that impact the difference between U.S. and Swedish outcomes. We can’t say with 100 percent certainty that Sweden’s refusal to lock down saved their economy or is responsible for the miraculously low death rate.

But it would also be foolish to say that the decision didn’t play some role in the different outcome

We can all learn two significant lessons from how COVID-19 responses have played out in the U.S. versus Sweden.

First, it is clear that the expert class in America whom the left appeals to at every turn (aren’t you sick of hearing “scientists say” or “experts find”?) is worth substantially less than we pay them.

We’ve spent literally trillions of dollars as a result of this virus and have only managed to buy our own personal hell.

Second, Sweden succeeded using an approach that left people free. The response they got from the U.S. media complex, however, wasn’t celebration and an urge toward duplication. It was derision and aspersion.

That betrays what lays at the heart of everything COVID-19-related.

In America, COVID-19 has never been first and foremost a virus to fight. It has instead been a tool that the left, anti-Trumpers and the establishment could use to mercilessly kick Americans in our collective groin.

With COVID-19, the left finally found a chink in Trump’s armor. The left knew exploiting it was vital, and they knew that Americans would have to suffer if they wanted to succeed.

As America continues to languish economically even as deaths drop, remember to thank the left for that.

And when you walk into that voting booth on Tuesday, Nov. 3, remember to pay the left back for the hell they’ve just put us through — pay them back by voting for Donald J. Trump.

So deaths of .03% is a disaster? The USA has 8200/mil each year. That’s @ 2.7 deaths which mans everyone is going to die from something but they are all dying from the beervirus until novemebr for some reason.

I would bet that 25% or so of the deaths were actually caused by the china virus and those were old, frail people with little strength. . The other deaths were caused primarily by something else but they most likely tested positive. Of course, I question a lot of the test results as well. I’ve heard plenty of stories of people getting tired of waiting to take the test, leave and get a notice days later they are positive.

Stupid people remain stupid until death, then they cease to exist. The whu who flu is the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on humanity. Jeez, the Spanish flu had legs, man this whu who flu nonsense can’t even make most people break a sweat. Old folks like me die of the flu every year, tens of thousands of us but we don’t run and hide from life. Now all those who have been offended by my remarks can go and hide somewhere, just real far away from me please.

Agreed. By my amateur calculations, the current mortality rate for coronavirus is 3.3%.

Though not mathematically earth shattering, I simply divide the number of known cases (those currently ill) into the number of deaths. You will get a decimal fraction, so move the decimal point two places to the right to achieve a percentage.

The US figure is always lower than for the world population and my home state of Texas is usually half the national average.

Works for me.

old white guy

That mortality rate would only be valid with valid numbers. It is actually two tenths of one percent.

The problem with that is that the number of deaths has been inflated by CDC directives that changed the way doctors determine Cause of Death AND a strong financial incentive was given to hospitals to attribute admissions to CV19 (20% bonus over charges for each CV19 reported).

Remember that according to the CDC’s new rules George Floyd’s death should have been due to CV19. And the financial incentive might lead hospital administrators to “convince” a lot of doctors behind closed doors to consider listing CV19 as COD on a lot of death certificates. And I believe that is why the number of people reported as dying of heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia, and cancer plummeted when CV19 came on the scene.

Tell me about it. My wife’s uncle died in April as the result of a heart attack and had been a shut-in heart patient for years.

At the ER, he tested negative for the virus but CDC has paid a bounty and it showed up on his death certificate as a comorbidity.

The hospital staff said they didn’t “trust” the test, so why use it as a diagnostic and why quote its results as does the CDC ?

CreoleGumbo
CreoleGumbo

It all boils down to money! And reporting covid is big bucks to the hospitals. I have no doubt that hospital administrators are threatening doctors behind closed doors to write covid on admissions and on death certificates. And the doctors WILL obey because if they are fired and lose hospital privileges they will not find another (respectable) job as a doctor and there will be very little that they can do to fight it.

The fact that a medical phenomenon has been made into a political issue is the bulk of the problem. The commiecrats will say it is worse than it really is, the right will paint a brighter picture while being careful not to appear too Pollyanna-ish, and various government entities like CDC will want to wrap their mouths around it, too.

From one old white guy to another … ur basic problem, of course, is that there are a lot of very stupid people. Yes, this is the biggest fraud ever. And there have been a few good ones before this. But this one is their Plan A. Where this was headed, was pretty clear from the start: mandatory vaccine, which will morph DNA into God knows what, but something no longer human. And of course the destruction of America. The target always has been America — they’ve taken care of Europe with the forced invasion of Muslims over the past 30 or so years.

I think the powers that be got tired. They’ve tried everything they could do disarm this country. Not happening. They had the immigration act back in ’65. You’d think that almost 50 years later, that would have destroyed this country. Nope. Flood in Mexicans from the south, but that hasn’t done it, either.

So … a ‘pandemic.’ A ‘deadly virus.’ So easy to scare people into submission … astounding, but not.

I had initially though that this was a ‘trial run,’ seeing how far they could take this stuff before people chafed at it. But people haven’t. So … they’re going all out.

We have an interesting 90 days ahead of us. November has the earmarkings of a very catastrophic month. Everything lies in the balance, doesn’t it?

There’s still not a shred of empirical evidence that lockdowns have slowed the spread.

A comparison of Sweden (No lockdown), Israel (Full/Partial lockdown), and New Jersey (Full/Partial lockdown), places on three different continents with similar population sizes and urban density, illustrates that lockdowns had ZERO IMPACT on infection rate. In fact, NJ has over double the infection rate of Sweden and Israel.

ISRAEL
Lockdown…..Population…..Positives / %…….Deaths…..CFR%…….Mortality Rate
Full/Partial……..8.88M………74K / .0083……. …546……..0073%……6.35 per 100K

SWEDEN
Lockdown…..Population…..Positives / %…….Deaths…..CFR%…….Mortality Rate
…None………….10.23M………81K / .0079………5,744………7%………56 per 100,000

NEW JERSEY
Lockdown…..Population…..Positives / %…….Deaths…..CFR%…….Mortality Rate
Full/Partial……..8.88M………188K / .0211…….15,922…….8.4%……..179 per 100K

The smoking gun is the Case Fatality Rate (% of Positives that died) and Mortality Rate (deaths per 100,000 population).

NJs Mortality rate is over 3 times Sweden and 28 times Israel.
NJs Case Fatality Rate is 11.5 times higher than Israel.

Bottom line: New Jersey’s draconian leftist lockdown have done nothing to prevent Covid from spreading, and NJ hospitals and LTC facilities have been an unmitigated failure at keeping people alive.

Why does NJ Gov Murphy still have his job?

Just raising a wee little hand here, Sweden is still way ahead of the US in fatalities etc on a per capita basis. We are expected to become as bad as Sweden sometime in a month or three. And I am sure THAT depends on the riots. If you get rash and look for where the infections curve starts its steep climb in say Alabama, Texas, Oregon, California, Washington and so forth it’s between one and two weeks after, well, you guess.
Is it after the stores and businesses were permitted to open? No.
Is it after churches were allowed to meet? No.
Is it after nail salons were allowed to open? No.
Bowling alleys? No.
Well, come on, what was it?
Was it the George Floyd protests? Aw you finally guessed it. Project the curves and admire the correlation.

We, like others, have overreacted to the virus and assumed the absolute worst of the unknown in our “Chicken Little” response.

It’s simple. Going overboard with this hand cleaning fetish we have developed, we stand to make Lady Macbeth look normal, “Out, damned spot; out I say!” — Act V, Scene 1

Nonsense you do not over react to an unknown virus or an invisible enemy. This was very new and mysterious to begin with, virus. So called ‘expert’ views were changing almost daily. The media as usual jumped on very rumour and change of policy as if it were handed down from Mt Sinai. The medical and research community are only now getting a good idea of what they are dealing with.

No they were wrong and have said so. Compare Sweden to Finland, it has twice the population yet has had nearly 9 times more cases and more than 17 times more deaths. The numbers for its neighbours are similar though Denmark has rather more cases; Denmark has about 1 million more population than Finland; Norway has roughly the same population but slightly more cases. Generally one can say they are roughly even. Finland’s lockdown was for business, restaurants, schools etc. but there were no travel restrictions, no shortages. BTW Sweden got about 500 new cases since yesterday. I do not see how those figures support the anti lockdown case which PG et al are obsessed with. The ‘laissez faire’ approach is playing dice with people’s lives.
Finland is relaxing the lockdown I have eaten out almost every week since end of June and more stores are open. There has been no spike in cases. I should note that Scandinavians and Finns have a similar culture and are more self disciplined than many countries I could mention.

One big difference is that Sweden’s top advisor is an epidemiologist and ours is a medical doctor, Anthony Fauci.
Fauci as a doctor of medicine is not an expert in control of diseases that affect populations of people. Fauci has been and continues to give advice in an area outside of his realm of expertise – and this is the result.

An epidemiologist knows that the only way to end this is to establish herd immunity and also knows that the virus will mutate to a less virulent form within 2 or 3 years and fizzle out. Fauci’s advice to get rid of the virus by locking the country down, etc. was either stupid or a deliberate attempt to destroy the country and aid in the Communist takeover because he knew full well that his advice if carried out would only prolong this epidemic.

Taiwan is the same. It was one of the first countries to ascertain what China was up to and take steps. They haven’t shut down their economy. Everyone wore a mask from early days and carried on with life. They have a population of around 25 million, about the same as Australia in a country the size of Victoria, our smallest state, which I might add is in the fourth week of a ten week total shut down. This is because our dopey premier is having palpitations that we have had 130 odd deaths in 6 months. You couldn’t make this rubbish up it’s so crazy. Taiwan, well its had nine deaths and most of those were from people returning to Taiwan. For this the world is bankrupting itself and the effects will cause chaos and hardship for decades.

Congratulations to Sweden! Wise decisions. I wish that Trump would have followed his “gut instincts” and resisted obeying the Fauci/Birx shutdown agenda. It would have been wise to consult with other actual “experts” but Trump was infatuated with these two bureaucrat “experts”. Now the populace finds ourselves under the boot of governors and mayors. Yes you are absolutely correct. Fauci is only an expert because someone in government who knows nothing of medicine or epidemiology gave him a job at the NIH. Within the medical profession this would have been an issue best addressed by an epidemiologist. And Fauci is not an epidemiologist. He was essentially giving advice, and still is, on issues with which he has not real expertise and he obviously lacked the humility to tell POTUS that this matter should be addressed by an epidemiologist, a doctor who studies the transmission of diseases through populations of people.
