EU President Calls for Borders to Remain Open During Coronavirus Outbreak

The president of the European Commission called for borders to remain open within the EU’s Free Movement travel zone during the COVID-19 outbreak, as countries across the bloc enact border controls.
Story continues below advertisementOn Sunday, Ursula von der Leyen urged European Union member states to keep their borders open so that medical supplies will be able to be transported to countries most affected from the coronavirus.
“In this moment of crisis it is of utmost importance to keep our internal market going,” von der Leyen said in a video on social media.
“If we do not take action now, shops will start facing difficulties in refilling their stocks of certain products coming from elsewhere in the Single Market,” she said, adding: “Protecting people’s health should not block goods and essential staff from reaching patients, health systems, factories and shops.”
“Just imagine, as we increase production of medical equipment, factories cannot get the components they need in time, thousands of bus and truck drivers are stranded at internal borders on parking lots, creating more health risk and disrupting our supply chains,” she warned.
The president of the EU commission also called for export controls to be placed on medical devices, preventing their sale outside the EU, while imploring member states to abandon export restrictions on medical supplies within the bloc.
“We need to help each other. By producing more, keeping it in the European Union and sharing with each other we can protect our health workers and patients and contain the spread of the virus,” von der Leyen said…….

Think we all need tighter borders and stop all travel, movements till we got some control.
Those that have lost jobs need to be employed by the government to help with food chain to those in need including homeless. Keep all to zones. Food maybe needed to be flown in by helicopter. Helicopters with huge nets, no landing.

Been worried about it for years, India the other major country followed by others. Most of the Bandaids, Cotton Wool etc made in India.
I often pick up items on the supermarket to see where made and how much a product is Australian. Below is what should be on heaps of items in the supermarket but a long way to go and one should not need a microscope to read the labelling. Even canned food, frozen foods mostly from New Zealand and do not know where NZ obtained the ingredients from. I want companies that support Halal out of our food chain

Based on the headline it seemed they were talking about external borders, but they’re referring to internal EU borders to ensure the transport of goods/medical supplies.
I think that’s fairly sensible. However they should stop the free movement of people as much as possible since some places like Italy have a far higher rate of infection than others.
At the very least they should have exams for people trying to cross the border, to prevent further spread. Some people can also be carriers, showing no symptoms but have the disease still.
They should fully halt all migration and immigration from other countries.
