Twitter is testing new ways to “fight misinformation”

Twitter users could earn “points” and a “community badge” by policing speech that violates left-wing dogma.

Twitter is testing new ways to fight misinformation — including a community-based points system

A leaked demo features bright red and orange badges for tweets that are deemed “harmfully misleading.”

By Ben Collins, NBC News, February

Twitter is experimenting with adding brightly colored labels directly beneath lies and misinformation posted by politicians and other public figures, according to a leaked demo of new features sent to NBC News.

Twitter confirmed that the leaked demo, which was accessible on a publicly available site, is one possible iteration of a new policy to target misinformation. The company does not have a date to roll out any new misinformation features.

In this version, disinformation or misleading information posted by public figures would be corrected directly beneath a tweet by fact-checkers and journalists who are verified on the platform and possibly by other users who would participate in a new “community reports” feature, which the demo claims is “like Wikipedia.”

“We’re exploring a number of ways to address misinformation and provide more context for tweets on Twitter,” a spokesperson said. “Misinformation is a critical issue and we will be testing many different ways to address it.”

The demo features bright red and orange badges for tweets that are deemed “harmfully misleading” in nearly the same size as the tweet itself displayed prominently directly below the tweet that contains the harmful misinformation.

Examples of misinformation included a false tweet about whistleblowers by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., a tweet about gun background checks by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and a tweet by an unverified account posting a doctored video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

The leaked demo also shows an example of medical misinformation, including an example about the new coronavirus by a verified Twitter account.

The impending policy rollout comes as the 2020 election season is ramping up, with Twitter playing a central role in some of the daily give and take among the candidates. On Thursday, former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s campaign posted an edited video that made it seem as if there had been a long pause when he asked during Wednesday’s Democratic presidential debate whether the other candidates had ever started a business.

Last month, Twitter announced a policy to ban tweets that “deceptively share synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm,” such as deep fakes.

In one iteration of the demo, Twitter users could earn “points” and a “community badge” if they “contribute in good faith and act like a good neighbor” and “provide critical context to help people understand information they see.”The impending policy rollout comes as the 2020 election season is ramping up.Twitter

The points system could prevent trolls or political ideologues from becoming moderators if they differ too often from the broader community in what they mark as false or misleading.

“Together, we act to help each other understand what’s happening in the world, and protect each other from those who would drive us apart,” the demo reads.

Twitter reiterated to NBC News that the community reporting feature is one of several possibilities that may be rolled out in the next several weeks.

“This is a design mock-up for one option that would involve community feedback,” the spokesperson said.

In the demo, community members are asked whether a tweet is “likely” or “unlikely” to be “harmfully misleading.” They are then asked to rate how many community members would answer the same on a sliding scale of 1 to 100 before elaborating on why the tweet is harmfully misleading.

“The more points you earn, the more your vote counts,” the demo reads.

Some other websites have successfully used community moderation to regulate their platforms. Information on Wikipedia has been moderated by anonymous users since its inception in 2001. It is frequently vandalized in breaking news situations by political actors, which can sometimes lead more powerful moderators to temporarily lock down pages.

Reddit also has hundreds of volunteer moderators who set and enforce rules for its many communities.

CORRECTION (Feb. 20, 2020, 10:45 p.m. ET): A previous version of this article misstated when Twitter will release new features to counter misinformation. There is currently no timeline; they are not scheduled to roll out on March 5. The article also misstated the leadership role held by Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. She is the speaker of the House, not the House majority leader.

twitter is testing new ways to propagate fake news, and censorship. The truth, facts hold no place in the so-called social media, Twitter, Facebook, the entire perfidious, treasonous enterprise called the social media.

…like in the Harry Potter movies…..what was it called? The Ministry of Truth? That was the exact opposite.
I see Soros as Voldermort…HE WHO SHOULD NOT BE NAMED ON BREITBART…or you get monitored. I believe Glenn Beck refers to him as Hydra….both work.

The fact that Soros remains sucking free air confirms that the conspiracy id deeper and wider than the said swamp. Hydra, indeed, I hope all is well ladywarrior. Undoubtedly, this site, too, is heavily monitored by those of the said conspiracy.

…I’m positive they are working on that . When I lived in Vegas they were going around changing out people’s utility meters….so that signals would be sent to them 24/7 of if you were home or gone….how much energy your were using, etc.
Anyone who refused the new monitors was charged an extra $8 a month for someone to manually read it.

Oh, yes, “smart” homes. The meters are only part of it. The smart appliances [even light bulbs!] are connected to the Internet and, yes, they have already been hacked. That Ring door bell can be turned into a spying device for other people.

SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Twitter has a right to do whatever it wants. IT IS PRIVATELY OWNED, even though it is on the Stock Market. IT IS CONSTITUTIONAL. The moment we start restricting ANYTHING just because someone complains, we become more and more a TOTALITARIAN COUNTRY. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT?

HOWEVER, Americans need to LEAVE TWITTER. That is part of the supply and demand premise. You don’t like your Doctor, find another. Don’t like a website, go to another, etc………

What I don’t understand is why TWITTER believes it has the right to run over our First Amendment right. That is what they are attacking. I also don’t undertsand why they are getting away with it.

…because Trump hasn’t had time to take a look at it….the enemies keep him distracted on so many other things…..however, you get a bunch of lawsuits started and it won’t be long before he weighs in and send the Feds…..

However, Pres. Trump is one of the most prolific users of Twitter. If his thumbs get arthritis, he will have a Problem.

Truth by popular vote — the nazis, muslums and Communists will love this; at least until they have the necessary political power to just imprison anyone who doesn’t agree w/their brand of truth.
Wikipedia (spit) is an object lesson on how f’ing muslums and their collaborating traitors can make propaganda about islum into truth.

More censorship on the way!
It is not their place to determine this.

Time to change Twitter’s name to Double Speak Good, Comrade Speak, Pravada, Correct Thought, Liberalators, or maybe even Safe Speak Zone. Better yet, every conservative stop using it and watch its profits tumble.

Is email or posting to your own web page really all that bad? Maybe a bit more work but better than having to watch every word you type, or be fact checked by those who they themselves need a fact checker.

I’ve never had a twitter account and don’t plan on having one.
I don’t like the idea of giving Twitter a victory and suggesting we have an alternative and letting Twitter set a precedence. I hope someone, somewhere is fighting this censorship. We do need other Twitter alternatives but not at the expense of giving Twitter a censorship victory.

Censorship needs to go. I can understand banning profanity, or obscenity and that’s not to hard to figure out what fits that category but imaginary “bullying” and disagreeing with someone should NEVER be banned. That’s part of what makes us a free society. These delicate cup cakes enforcing politically correct censorship need to get over themselves and hunger for self importance. Tolerance swings both ways! In the old days we could agree to disagee and leave it at that.

Twitter is testing new ways to “fight misinformation”

A. that’s why I have never gone on Twitter and FakeBook….
B. I don’t like the “neighborhood”.
C. Like the Chinese they are gathering information on us….including facial recognition. It’s why I keep my camera on my computer covered over.
D. and their statement translates into the old Soviet and German Fascism….

When I shop online for an item….and then 5 seconds later I’m getting all kinds of ads from other sites of the same or similar things….I know the internet is no longer private. I was going to get a VPN, but Hulu said it would interfere with me getting Hulu. See how nice this is all tied up? SARC/

It’s coming folks, and has already started.

Seventy Bloomberg feeds taken down. We’ll see how this turns out.

The interesting thing is that one of the first people to be taken out was Mini-Mike Bloomberg who had seventy of his Twitter feeds suspended for being AstroTurf. The next eight months are going to be “different” and maybe strange.
