Turkish government destroys more than 300,000 books

Regime says it is cracking down on anything linked to Fethullah Gülen, the Muslim cleric it blames for 2016’s attempted coup

Story continues below advertisement

By Alison Flood, The Guardian, 6 Aug 2019:

More than 300,000 books have been removed from Turkish schools and libraries and destroyed since the attempted coup of 2016, according to Turkey’s ministry of education.

Turkey’s education minister Ziya Selçuk announced last week that 301,878 books had been destroyed as the government cracks down on anything linked to Fethullah Gülen, the US-based Muslim cleric who is accused by Turkey of instigating 2016’s failed military coup. Gülen has denied involvement.

The figure was first reported by the popular newspaper Hürriyet, with images of books being seized and burned published by online news outlet Kronos27.

According to the website Turkey Purge, which describes itself as “a small group of young journalists who are trying to be the voice for Turkish people who suffer under an oppressive regime”, in 2016 a maths book was banned for featuring Gülen’s initials in a question reading “from point F to point G”. In December 2016, Turkish newspaper BirGün reported that 1.8m textbooks had been destroyed and reprinted for containing the “objectionable” word Pennsylvania, which is where Gülen lives in a guarded compound. Streets named Gülen in Ankara have also been renamed, according to reports.
‘Suffocating climate of fear’ in Turkey despite end of state of emergency

Free speech organisations said they were alarmed at the comments from Turkey’s minister of education. “In just three years, the publishing landscape in Turkey has been all but decimated, with 29 publishing houses shut down by emergency decree for ‘spreading terrorist propaganda’,” said PEN International and English PEN in a joint statement.

A 2018 report from English PEN found that, following the state of emergency decreed after the attempted coup, 200 media outlets and publishing organisations had been shut down, 80 writers subjected to investigations and prosecutions and 5,822 academics dismissed from 118 public universities. The report pointed to a “crisis of freedom of expression” in Turkey.

“The government has dramatically increased its influence on the media and publishing landscape, thereby silencing critical voices,” said PEN. “We call on the Turkish authorities to permit the reopening and independent operation of publishing houses, and to urgently end their far-reaching crackdown on freedom of expression, which continues unabated.”

Turkey’s collective burning of books is synonymous and indicative of Erdogan, his henchmen’s despotism. Wantonness and disregard for the people’s freedom of press and speech. Hitler’s Reich did the same; the subsequent victims were not books but people, Jews, political dissidents, and others.

This book burning should be a warning to all of those of the West’s faux-Democracies and this Constitutional Republic. The Leftists of every inclination moderate or radical, are striving to purge those of a diverse political penchant of their Constitutional or Democratic Rights throughout the West. Book burning is but the genesis of an autocratic/totalitarian regimes are means to eradicate citizens’ rights.

America’s Democrats and its legion of aspirant Bolsheviks are of the same dogma. Book burning is but a mere symptom that which is to follow. The tainting of Conservatism continues with no end by those of the moderate and radicalized left, namely, the Democrats. Along with its appendages, Islam, alleged progressives, anti-Semites or others bent on renouncing the Rights of those not akin to their totalitarian diktat.

It is not a fabrication to state the Lefts’, Democrat’s censorship scheme is in full-gear and soon will accelerate to where Erdogen’s Turkey is today.

Turkey has never been a free, open democracy. It has always denied the Armenian Genocide (and criminalized discussing it). It has always been a religious apartheid state. Then there’s the small matters of what happened to Greeks (and Jews) during the Istanbul pogrom in the 1950’s and in Cyprus during the 1970’s and the facts that there have been no reparations for the all kufar victims or even acknowledgement of the crimes perpetrated against them by the Turkish muslum vermin.

I’m disgusted by the Ataturk lovers here, I only wish they had been in Smyrna during the massacre of Greeks ordered by Ataturk. Strangely enough, most of those Greeks were Christians, which kinda makes it seem as if “secular” Ataturk ordered a religiously motivated pogrom against Christians.

I believe people are lead by those nose, not brain, by reading historical a-kissing. I agree with you entirely; the man is undeserved of an ounce of admiration.

Wouldn’t be the first time that Muslims burned books.

Good points, all the scrolls in the ancient libraries of Alexandria and Nalanda (Buddhist university in India) were burned by muslums.

The destruction of written materials by the Islamic forces has been documented over the last two centuries. Amrou, the leader of the Muslim armies in Alexandria Egypt, asked the Caliph ’Umar what to do with the thousands of manuscripts that he found in the great Library of Alexandria. The caliph’s infamous reply:

“As for the books you mention, here is my reply. If their content is in accordance with the book of Allāh, we may do without them, for in that case the book of Allāh more than suffices. If, on the other hand, they contain matter not in accordance with the book of Allāh, there can be no need to preserve them. Proceed then and destroy them.”

The Muslim writer Ibn al-Qifti (1172-1248) tells us that the books were distributed to the public baths of Alexandria where they were used to feed the stoves which kept the baths comfortably warm. Ibn al-Qift iwrites that “ They say, that it took six months to burn all
that mass of material.”
Eutychius tells us that there were four thousand baths that received books from the Alexandrian library.

We’ll never know what the losses to Western civilisation were in that book burning in Alexandria. I’d imagine minimally lots of scrolls written by the Greeks and Romans. Nalanda was not only a library, but a Buddhist university and the Buddhist monks were butchered right alongside the burning of their ancient scrolls.

This is why ordinary citizens ought to buy and read conservative books now while you still have the chance. I’ve got ’em and they are quite interesting and informative, such as explaining why tariffs work etc.

It would be interesting to know how many of those burned books were by Jewish authors in the same vein as those the Nazis destroyed.

Welcome to 1984. This is so very very serious. This is the Road to Hell. It is truly terrifying to have to watch the World burn while the majority literally fan the flames of self destruction, all the while believing that they are immune from all repercussions. Oh well, the only truly good thing about all of this insanity is that it should provide the impetus for extreme Nationalism, which is great. That should provide ample reason to ship all of this slime back to the swamps they crawled out of.

We are back to low IQ idiots doing the most dead brain things. Why don’t they take them to an insineration plant and create energy from them.
Turkey then threatens war against the west and we flock in droves to go on holiday there and spend our dollars financing islamic terrorism.

Isn’t is about time to destroy those who back NAZI-ISLAM starting with their funding then going down the line. The longer we wait the worse it will be and the more innocents will be laid to waste by the filth of Islam. Dr. Bill Warner is right the way to win over islam is to tell the ignorant moslems about MOHAMMED but they are pushing more than just informing them.
