Man sentenced to 15 years after Knoxville mosque stabbing attack

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — One person was hospitalized after being stabbed with a steak knife at a Knoxville mosque on Monday.

According to the Knoxville Police Department, a verbal argument between Daniel Jay Porter and Shadab Siddiqi at Annoor Mosque ended when Siddiqi was stabbed in the chest by Porter.

Saddiqi was transported to UT Medical Center for emergency life-saving surgery.

Annoor Mosque released a statement about the incident on Tuesday that said, “Some of you may have heard that police are investigating an incident that that occurred at Masjid Annoor (Annoor Mosque) yesterday evening. We wanted to assure everyone that the incident involved two people who knew each other and was not a crime targeted at the masjid or at Muslims. The offender was taken into custody and does not pose a continuing risk. Because of the ongoing investigation, we are unable to share any further details but wanted to ease safety concerns that people may have had upon hearing the news.”

A report from Knoxville Police lists the bias/ motivation for the offense as “none.”

Porter was arrested and is being held on a charge of attempted first-degree murder with a $200,000 bond.
