Trump effect: Netanyahu visits Oman

3

This is the first visit between an Israeli leader and an Omani leader since 1996. What has happened since then to make this happen now? Donald Trump became President of the United States. He has pursued a stronger pro-Israel line than any President has since the State of Israel was founded, and it is having an effect. When Barack Obama was President, a Muslim state such as Oman would never have dreamed of meeting with an Israeli Prime Minister, no matter how much the two nations’ interests might have coincided. But now all that has changed, at least for as long as Trump is in the White House. When a great man stands strong, it makes a difference.

“Netanyahu pays secret visit to Oman,” Associated Press, October 26, 2018:

Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Friday that the prime minister has returned from a visit to the Gulf state of Oman, where he joined the country’s leader in the first meeting of its kind in more than 20 years.

The office said in a statement Friday that Netanyahu had been invited by Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said after lengthy communications.

Netanyahu and his wife were joined on the trip by Mossad Head Yossi Cohen, his Foreign Ministry director, and other defense officials.

Israel and Oman do not have diplomatic relations. The meeting was the first between leaders of the two countries since 1996 and former Israeli premier Yitzhak Rabin made a similar surprise visit to Oman two years earlier.

The sultanate has long had a quiet role in fostering negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians and has openly called for the need for a Palestinian state while also acknowledging a need for an Israeli state.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also paid a three-day visit to Oman earlier this week.

While historic, the meeting did not immediately signal a breakthrough in peace efforts because Oman does not have the clout or leverage of nations like Saudi Arabia to strongly advocate for, or push the two sides closer to the negotiating table.

The premier has repeatedly stated in recent years that Israel has developed good relations with several Arab states, despite a lack of official ties….

The fact that Oman is an absolute monarchy & its King who has his title by birthright doesn’t have to answer to the Islamic majority needs to be stated as a positive thing! Fact is Islamic States should be run by absolute monarchies whose institutional strengths alone can guarantee peace as long as the monarch has an army that will put down the majority of its citizens and not obey their prejudices!
