Paraguay has announced that it will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem by the end of May, following the United States and Guatemala.

Why would Paraguay move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem? Do they expect to get something from the US, or from Israel, for doing so? Somehow I doubt that it suddently dawned on them that, in proper respect to Israel, they should move their embassy to the capital.

I assume they believe there is no real diplomatic or economic price to pay from the Arab world, but nonetheless, I am wondering what the advantage is to a nation like Paraguay with limited ties to Israel (although they have had a historical affinity for the Jewish state).

To turn this arouind a bit, why did they wait for the USA to move first? They could have had the advantage of first mover had they done it years ago. A possible answer to that question is the before the US moved, there would have been a price to pay from the Arab world, but as a mere follower of the US lead, that concern has been eliminated.

Yes, it’s a cost / benefit calculation and now is the perfect timing to jump on the Trump / Netanyahu band wagon for countries that want to be in good relations with America (Aid / trade deals / aligning with the pro US block materializing in south America) and Israel (Aid in tech / water / agriculture etc), in a time were the traditional Anti Israeli stance in the Sunni world is crumbling (only Qatar, Turkey and the “Palestinians”, remain viscerally hostile to Israel in public) as Moderate Sunni nations are getting geo-politically closer to Israel (in a anti Iran / Muslim Brotherhood / ISIS Alliance) and Iran that never had any real leverage on the western hemisphere countries to begin with, is just HOURS away from being put on their knees by Trump

I expect more countries from south / central America, sub Saharan Africa and even greater Europe, to move their embassies to Jerusalem by the end of this year

Strategically, in the grand scheme of things, it is GOOD (actually vital…) for the US to have countries like Paraguay in their orbit as it means:
a) They will better collaborate with the US in the war against terror (+Iranian south American front) / drugs / human trafficking and immigration in general
b) They will have a more synergistic relationship with the US re trade
c) They will align themselves politically / diplomatically (UN / Regional bodies) with the US, countering Anti American countries in South America
d) International geo politics being somewhat of a sum zero game, with strong and reciprocal relations with the US, they are far less likely to orbit other major powers like China (which is investing heavily in south America), Iran (Hizbullah infiltration to SA), Russia (Energy diplomacy)

There are no free lunches, if we want smaller countries to be on our side, we (for all the above GOOD reasons) must help them with their own problems, big picture, and with so many sworn enemies (out side and inside America) it is worth while for Trump’s US to attract as many countries as possible into it’s orbit, the foreign aid aspect of this, is negligible

They may be looking for help from Israel and the United States with all the Hezbollah running around in the Cuidad Del Este area. This is a tri-border region that attracts smugglers.

Guatemala’s President, Jimmy Morales, announced the move because partly he was an Evangelical Christian. Perhaps the same is true for Paraguay’s leader? (Well, he is a Catholic, but still…)

Agree. They cannot even save their country forget about them standing up for israel.

Trump was conned by Abbas initially but when he found out the truth boy was he mad as hell at the jihadi http://bit.ly/2rOmfyJ

That’s when he decided enough is enough and that inspite of huge opposition led to shifting of Embassy to Jerusalem and No more funding to the jihadis.
