Napolitano: Berkeley “Free Speech Week” to feature “controversial and noxious ideas”

75

Napolitano said:”But nonetheless they’re coming to speak, they’re coming to put forward controversial and noxious ideas, and, you know, colleges and universities are places where noxious ideas are expressed.”

Freedom is a noxious idea? Freedom of conscience freedom of expression and individual rights is controversial and noxious?

“So how you carry that out, protect that value — that’s the challenge that we face,” Napolitano said. “That’s why I think it’s important that if these events are going to occur, that they be done safely and securely and, I think unfortunately that means universities bear the cost.”

Story continues below advertisement

Who else should bear the cost? If not the university, then who?

“Berkeley ‘Free Speech Week’ with Bannon will be costly, university president says,” by Benjamin Wermund, Politico, September 20, 2017:

University of California President Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that the so-called Free Speech Week planned at Berkeley this month that will feature former White House strategist Steve Bannon will be an expensive test for the school that has become the center of debate over free speech on college campuses.

Napolitano said that her office, which oversees the University of California system, will take the unprecedented step of helping Berkeley cover the the “substantial” security costs. That protection is necessary to ensure free speech on campus, she said.

“This will be a test for Berkeley,” she said. “It’s a cost that the university is bearing to protect the speakers but also to protect the value of free speech … But the rock and the hard place that the campus is in, is the value of free speech versus the need to protect the safety and the security of the students and the faculty.”

Napolitano said security for a recent speech by conservative author Ben Shapiro cost the school $600,000. The event this month including Bannon and planned by far right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos is expected to be four days of similar security needs, she said. She would not provide an exact figure.

Bannon’s appearance has been billed as “Bannon infiltrates Berkeley.”

“I think some of these speakers are coming deliberately to provoke, and I think to provoke a response,” she said. “But nonetheless they’re coming to speak, they’re coming to put forward controversial and noxious ideas, and, you know, colleges and universities are places where noxious ideas are expressed.

“So how you carry that out, protect that value — that’s the challenge that we face,” Napolitano said. “That’s why I think it’s important that if these events are going to occur, that they be done safely and securely and, I think unfortunately that means universities bear the cost.”…

“colleges and universities are places where noxious ideas are expressed”

True that. Noxious ideas like anti-Semitism, anti-Americanism, Marxism, Communism, identity politics, racial hatred, and the encouragement of gender dysphoria, pro-Jihad ideologies, and every other self-destructive idea known to humankind.

Well, no Janet, actually it’s not that fine a line between freedom of speech and safety.

It’s violent criminality.

Dennis

I certainly agree that there is a responsibility to provide a safe environment, and I hope that the protesters do not riot or become violent in any manner, although recent experience suggests that is likely to happen. The protester has the right to disagree with the speaker, but the protester must disagree in a fitting and reasonable manner, without violence. As to the comments in this article about the speech being “noxious,” I find that commentary to be “off the wall” and not conducive to our rights to speak freely. To me the defining characteristic to determine whether any speaker should be prohibited from speaking is to determine whether the speech is promoting and preaching for the commission of violence of any sought against anyone. Otherwise, I believe the right to speak freely should be a primary authorization, and Napolitano’s comments about “noxious” are rubbish. “Violence” should be her concern, not “noxious.” Free speech entails the right to be critical of another’s belief/thoughts and to outline that person’s thoughts on why that person rejects those beliefs/thoughts, as long as the manner of presenting those differences do not promote violence. To me, promoting violence is the only free speech that should be prohibited and can reasonably be defined as “noxious,” simply because our Constitution does not protect a speaker who promotes violence of any kind, as that conduct should be prosecuted as criminal.
People have to live with what they think is “noxious:” AS THAT TERM SHOULD NOT EVER BE USED TO DETERMINE WHETHER THERE IS JUSTIFICATION TO SHUT DOWN THE SPEAKER, AS IT IS REALLY UNDEFINEABLE BECAUSE WHAT TO ONE PERSON MAY BE HIS/HER ACCEPTED ATTITUDE/BELIEF TO ANOTHER PERSON MAY BE CRITICALLY REJECTED. THAT SHOULD BE THE WAY ADMINISTRATORS SHOULD APPROACH THE ISSUE OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

“I think unfortunately that means universities bear the cost”. What a stunned cow, did it ever occur to her, being the president of a university that feeds on taxpayer cash producing graduates that are useful only as land fill, that if they taught responsibility and mature intelligent behaviour, with students showing respect for learning and other people’s opinions, it would be much less expensive? Burt really why should she, snivelling and begging for government money is easier and more profitable.

Um, France and the UK have people talking jihad against the government all the time AND acting out on it. The same is not true for the U.S., knock wood. While the U.S. has people like Linda Soursewer spouting her bile, terror attacks here are nowhere near that of France and the UK. How many terror incidents has the UK had so far this year. France? Way more than the U.S. This isn’t to say the U.S. is absolutely safe. It isn’t. But, you should first ask why europe has far more terror attacks than the U.S. does, if in fact our muslim population is at or near Britain’s. Also, France and the UK penalize their own citizens for being armed. Not so, in the U.S. still.

That a UC president would make such inflammatory comments as……. “But nonetheless they’re coming to speak, they’re coming to put forward controversial and noxious ideas, and, you know, colleges and
universities are places where noxious ideas are expressed.” Napolitano effectively incited hate speech herself by saying those words. You can practically smell the contempt coming out of her. For all we know, that was the green light code to her programmed foot soldiers in brown shirts at Berkeley to get ready to disrupt the Free Speech conference.
All this coming from a woman who was recently outed as having hidden $175M of taxpayer money in the UC coffers. No doubt, money she had planned to give away to some of the DACA people. Of course, that’s all been sufficiently swept under the rug.

How much should it cost, really, to arm the cops with extra stun-guns, tasers, and smoke grenades, put them in riot-gear, and tell them to politely but firmly keep the BLM/Antifa crowd away from the discussion? That’s what we did here in Arizona at the last Trump rally, and it worked. It’s really easy to tell the BLM/Antifa crowd from the harmless and civil protesters; they’ll show up on different sides of the building, dress in clothes they can fight in, will carry shoulder-bags with suspiciously-heavy bottles in them, and they’ll deliberately hang around until sundown — even if the event ends before then. Put the plainclothes cops in the auditorium, in the front and back rows, with orders to stun and carry out any protesters who jump up and try to mob or down-shout or silence the speakers.

Once again, Napolitano reveals her utmost adoration for totalitarianism, which, of course is nothing earth shattering nor is she flying solo. Not unlike Obama, Clinton, the entirety of the Democrats and every Leftist in this nation and planet freedom of speech is repugnant. How any citizens of this nation can abide by this tyrannical and oppressive diktat is beyond overwhelming. It is also a ill-boding, the greatest threat to face this Constitutional Republic’s existence or continuance since the Civil War. The second of which has already begun.

Trump is blamed for being divisive while the truth is buried by the the Leftist betrayers, the Democrats, the progressives, all aspirant leftist revolutionaries/Bolsheviks; the truth, Obama and his Marxist conspirators were hell-bent on the ruination, the overthrow of this Republic. Deploying paid, mindless commie drones to unhinge civil-order via disparaging, protesting and denying Americans the First Amendment Rights and in time the entire Constitution.
