Integrity and Attribution: Obama’s Foreign Contribution and Campaign Finance Fraud, The Timeline, The Facts, The Work

Here's an update to yesterday's piece on "doing the right thing"…….. which was a big thank you kiss to Tom Blumer, editor of the leading business blog, Bizzy Blog, and a PJM contributor.

The foreign contribution story I broke in July 2008 took months to pull together. It is irritating to listen to people justify what amounts to an intellectual theft. It is wrong. Not only did we go through thousands of pages of FEC douments, but I followed up with David Keene (yes, Grover's boy) in 2008 as well. He was the President of the ACU, and I implored him to file suit against the BHO campaign. I sent Keene all of the evidence I uncovered and he assured me that the ACU would follow up. But I never heard back.

I wrote over 53 articles, some of them very lengthy, and all of them the result of hard work and creative investigation. It was all inclusive of serious violations of campaign finance fraud, including contributions from Gaza, gibberish donors, non-existent donors, foreign bundling, the exchange rate fiasco, in which people contributed $9.19 (for crying out loud), the fact that Obama websites published lists of people doing the bundling … which have never been credited to me, and for which my investigative efforts have never been acknowledged.

I merely request that the record kept straight. I am alleging no wrongdoing. But I did break tremendously creative ground, performed a public service, and never got credit for it. And it wasn't a couple articles that might have been missed. It was exhaustive.

Perhaps Ken Timmerman's failure to do the right thing was more than anything else what caused my work to be overlooked by those that picked up his story:

Thanks for copying me on your note. It doesn't help when Newsmax changes its article links. The one at Andy McCarthy's Corner item went 404, so I had every reason to believe it wasn't there any more.

Having read your report — Fair enough on giving credit to Pamela for the foreign contributions element. But otherwise …

Pamela can defend herself, but it's perfectly obvious to me (and more than a little disappointing) that any reader of your report would come away believing that Newsmax first discovered "Good Will" and that Newsmax did most of the dirty work and was first with the credit-card fraud angle. Neither is the case.

For the life of me, I don't understand why it's so important that people — left or right, blue or red, MSM or or too many bloggers and talk-radio types — feel like they can run with content without adequately giving credit or digging deep to find out who really deserves it. You're far from alone, so I'm not really singling you out, and for all I know your editors might have been the ones who watered down Pamela's contributions.

It's a shame, because it looks like Newsmax's treatment served to minimize Pamela's contributions in the minds of others (perhaps including Hot Air, Powerline, Ace, etc.) who jumped on your story. I know as a part-time blogger that when I finally began digging in October of 2008 I had to go about three layers deep before I found who originally did the lion's share of the work. I was appalled that very few knew. I still am.

I know it's spilt milk, but we should all be better than this.

 For reasons which perplex me to this day, a host of other commentators and conservative bloggers, I would suspect including Timmerman (whose Newsmax article is no longer available), took the results of Pamela's work and presented it as if it was their own, or at a minimum egregiously downplayed her role in gathering and assembling the damning information.
 
 Because of their reluctance to give credit where due, it's understandable that you might believe that Timmerman, Powerline, and several others who got to the story much later were the story's originators. They clearly weren't.
 
 Pamela Geller was the whistleblower. If we had been paying closer attention (myself included), we might have amplified her whistle loud enough to have stopped the madness we are currently enduring known as the Obama administration.
