KNIFE ATTACKER CHARGES NYPD — MAYOR MAMDANI SIDES WITH SUSPECT: Visits Hospitalized Attacker, Rejects Charges – Betrays Cops

On January 26, 22-year-old Jabez Chakraborty was holding a large kitchen knife and charged at NYPD officers who had responded to the emergency call. The officers tried to de-escalate, but ended up needing to fire. In response, Mayor Mandani is not concerned about his officer instead, he said: I spoke with the Chakraborty family, and I visited Jabez in the hospital, and there is no family who should have to endure this kind of pain (Nawfal).

Also, Mamdani does not want to press charges. Fox News, quoting Mamdani:  “In viewing this footage, it is clear to me that what Jabez needs is mental health treatment, not criminal prosecution from a district attorney” (Fox News).

This is another fitting example of why many are fleeing New York City. The dynamic is nicely captured in the opening of a piece at Tablet magazine: “My breaking point wasn’t getting mugged,” Josh Greenberg, a digital media strategist who left Park Slope, New York, in early 2022, told me. “It was realizing the city had more sympathy for the guy that mugged me than they did for me.” At a dinner a week following the attack, Josh’s friends, whom he’d known for years, criticized him for pressing charges after his phone was stolen, accusing him of “perpetuating cycles” and causing “harm” (Tablet).

NYPD releases body camera footage of Queens police-involved shooting

QUEENS – The NYPD released body-worn camera footage from an officer-involved shooting in Queens involving a 22-year-old man who was experiencing a mental health crisis.

The video has prompted renewed calls from city officials, including the mayor, for changes in how mental health emergencies are handled

Authorities said the man, identified as Jabez Chakraborty, was disorderly and displayed a large knife inside the entrance of the building.

Following the release of the video, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani renewed calls for a new mental health response system, saying mental health professionals, rather than police officers, should respond to certain emergency calls.

In a statement, Chakraborty’s family said they called 911 requesting an ambulance to help their son and said they were shocked and outraged by how the situation was handled.

NYPD executives are expected to brief the media at 2 p.m. this afternoon at the 107 Precinct regarding the shooting.

FOX 5 NY will stream the event live on YouTube and on the FOX Local App.

The body-camera footage shows officers repeatedly ordering Chakraborty to drop the knife before shots were fired.

Police said the NYPD Force Investigation Division is investigating the incident, which is standard procedure.

According to police, Chakraborty advanced toward responding officers, prompting one officer to discharge his firearm multiple times.

Emergency medical responders took Chakraborty to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with injuries police described as non-life-threatening.

Two officers were also taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, including tinnitus, police said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
