Over 100,000 Federal Employees Set to Resign in Largest Cut Since WWII
More than 100,000 U.S. federal civilian employees will formally resign on September 30, 2025, through the Deferred Resignation Program launched by the Trump administration in January 2025. The program provides paid administrative leave with full benefits until that date in exchange for voluntary departures aimed at reducing bureaucracy, potentially totaling 275,000 exits including retirements and firings. Co-led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s Department of Government Efficiency, the initiative projects $28 billion in annual savings despite a $14.8 billion payout cost, though concerns arise over service disruptions in agencies like Veterans Affairs.

WASHINGTON —The Office of Management and Budget issued a memo late Wednesday directing agencies to prepare for mass layoffs in the event of a government shutdown.
The shutdown could impact an already changing federal workforce. The federal government employed about 2.2 million workers nationwide in March, according to data from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

Washington, D.C., had the highest per capita of federal employees, with 20,200 employees per 100,000 residents, according to an analysis of the data by the Get the Facts Data
